Hi Everyone,

My youngest daughter is turning 8 at the end of the month. She wants to have a sleepover. I am looking for inexpensive ideas to make the party fun. I thought they can make their own fleece pillow (kit from Oriental Trading), but other than that I am blank. Should I just have the girls come around 5:00 pm and just do pizza, pillows and movie, or is that just too ordinary??? My daughter is really easy to please, but I want them to have a good time and not be bored!! Thanks for any ideas!!!

My daughter and her friends loved this. You are limited to about 9 girls or so, depending on the company you use. We hired a limo service. He showed up at our house at the given time and the limo was loaded with ice, sodas, etc. We then went to each guest's house to personally pick up. When everyone was picked up, he drove around with the girls while they listened to music, peered out the windows and out the sunroof when it was stopped. After the ride, they all came back to our house, had pizza, painted personal pillowcases, watched movies and they went to bed late. In the morning, I had hot donuts, milk, sausage, bacon and biscuits.

This was such a hit, we did it 2 yrs in a row.

8 might be a little young but for our daughter's 12th bday, we rented a suite at the Shops of Legacy Marriott. The girls went swimming, we walked around the shops, had dinner and came back to the suite. That was also a big hit!

Have fun! Susan

Instead of just doing a regular birthday cake, make cupcakes and leave them plain. Give the girls different colors of icing and different sprinkles and candies they can put on top. If you really want to get crazy as you put the batter in the individual cups you could let the girls add m&m's or chocolate chips, or what ever fun thing you could bake into the cupcake. The girls will have a blast waiting for THEIR cupcake to come out of the oven. While they wait they could color pictures that you download and print from the internet in the theme of your daughter's party i.e. princesses, teddy bears, etc.

I had a party for my daughter who turned eight last year, and it was simply swimming and sidewalk chalk (they topped their own personal pizza and had cake). Everyone raved about what a good time the girls had. Also, I had a lateover for my six-year-old, with pizza and a movie, they all seemed thrilled, and the mothers applauded me for being willing to have it.
(I feared they were too simple, but I knew, like you, that my kids would enjoy it, so I did it).
I think your party will be enjoyed by all.

I recently did this with my daughter. I had all kinds of stuff planned. I was even going to take them to Game Works or Main Event. They ended up in the backyard all night. I barely was able to get them to come in for pizza. I would limit it to a few girls and you will be suprised at how they just take control and entertain themselves.

Simple is sometimes the best, and I think some girls are relieved to be able to be just girls once in a while instead of the grown-up things they are sometimes expected to do.

Maybe instead of ordering a pizza, you can buy the premade dough (or just do them on english muffins) and get sauce and toppings, and the girls can all decorate their own. That's really fun. Then they can make chocolate chip cookies and watch the movie.

I think your idea is great. I always did some sort of craft at my parties and everyone always had fun, like making sock puppets, and then doing a puppet show, and everyone always had fun.

Hi C.,

Last year when my oldest turned 7 we had a flip-flop frenzy party. The girls showed up around 200, we went swimming for about an hour and a half, then we came back and did cake and presents. Later we let the girls make their own flip-flops (really inexpensive!!!). I bought 10 pairs of flip-flops (all different colors) and about 20 bandanas at a craft store. The night before I cut the bandanas into strips of fabric. The girls tied the fabric onto the flip-flops and cut them to the length they wanted. They had so much fun doing this while they watched a movie. We also ordered pizza and had popcorn and juice boxes for them. They were so tired from swimming and the excitement of making flip-flops that they all crashed out about 10:00. Good luck with the party - hope this gives you some ideas. Happy Birthday to your daughter.

Wow, I still remember my 8th birthday party ... it was a sleepover too! My mom went to Merele Norman where they have (had) a kids make up kit (nice colors that washed off easy and were light) and it was in a cute pink lunchbox that we played dress up with. She got us some fun hats and gloves and dresses from thrift shops and grage sales to dress up with and do our make up and then we all got our polorids taken like a model shot to put in a card we made that said: Kristy's 8th Bday Memories the date and a fun thing we did that night to take home. My mom covered the walls with balloons (static electricity). Ordered Pizza and we watched a movie ... I fell asleep dont remember but I think It was The Little Mirmade. We had a blast, hope your little girl has one too!

It can be daunting to have a party for 8 year old girls. I have done it twice now! (girls age 14 and 8) I think one activity is enough. Maybe instead of a cake you can have cupcakes and let the girls decorate them with sprinkles and frosting. Turn the music on (radio disney is always a winner) and let the girls dance and sing karaoke style. Have movies on hand (High School Musical) to keep those girls that don't want to sing and dance, busy.
Have fun, and GOOD LUCK

I would - that sounds fun! Also at walmart i have seen those little almost sample size nail polishes for something like 2 for a dollar or something with all sorts of funky colors. You can get those and maybe even get a mary kay consultant whod be willing to come do a makeover for them. :)

My 8 year old had a party and we did Disney Karaoke and dress up stuff. You could find some kid-friendly make-up and let them get all "Cheetah Girl-y" or something. Then they could do the karaoke or watch Cheetah girls while they are all fancied up. I think the fun part was each girl having her own feather boa.

Let them play a game like "Pop Super Star". Where they get dressed up and apply make up to each other. Then they can sing karaoke to thier favorite hip tunes, hilary duff/hannah montana etc. If you have a camcorder then connect it to a tv screen and they are instantly on television. Also you can get the girls to make food, like cupcakes/cakes, mini pizzas. All of these things stalled time for me when dealing with my step-daughter party. Then before they go to bed, get them to watch a movie. I always throw in POP Quiz and they can win stuff for paying attention to the movie. It's really about getting them to be quiet because my husband goes to work the next day. Well I hope this helps.

One added event could be doing some rag curls, it's fun and safe for girls of all ages. Just let the girls cut up some thin strips of material ( old t-shirt or whatever) into strips about 1 inch wide by 3 inches long. With their hair damp roll the strip up into the hair and tie it. Go to sleep, in the morning after breakfast they will have fun taking them out and loooking at the curls in their hair....
Look at some arts and crafts for the night before. I will brainstorm for a little bit.

I think you've received some great suggestions already and I think most of my ideas have already been mentioned but I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents anyway! I think the Karaoke idea is a great one! Also, most girls that age love to do makeovers. They could fix each others hair, put makeup on each other, paint each others nails. You could find some cheap hats, scarves, and costume jewelry at a thrift store or goodwill. And then let them do a little fashion show for you.

I also like the make-your-own pizza idea. You could let them each make their own individual pizzas. I also remember when I was a kid and had a slumber party one time, my mom let us make our own donuts for breakfast. We were a bit older so you might have to help them with the cooking part, but here's how she did it. We just took regular canned biscuits and used a thimble (or other small circle) to cut a whole out of the center and then deep-fried them in some oil (not the healthiest option, but oh so yummy!). Then we rolled them in sugar and cinnamon. Or maybe you could frost some and put sprinkles on them. We had a blast doing it!

If you're crafty, you might consider helping them make mini-scrapbooks. Or maybe they could all pitch in and just make a birthday scrapbook for the birthday girl!

C.,

For my 10 year-olds sleepover. We did a spa theme. It was a blast. Their favors were, mini-nailpolish, toe-seperaters, nail file, nail brush, etc.

We soaked feet and painted toe nails and finger nails. I bought one package on rub-ons and jewels to go on nails. Her friends said that she had the best birthday party.

Hope that helps,
H.

That sounds like fun! I know things are more "advanced" now than when we were that age, but sometimes I think its good to keep it simple. Pizza and a movie sounds great! Do you have a Kareoke player? Even just pretend microphones and a radio would do the trick. You can buy some dress up stuff, like feather boas and such and they could be Rock Stars for the night! Then, when its time to wash off all the makeup (if you let them do that), they could get into their jammies and paint their nails and then watch a movie and/or make the pillow. You could let them take pictures (with your camera or buy disposbales) and they could make picture frames to put the pics in once they get printed. Mom...depending on how involved you want to be...you can be the paparazzi to their Rock Stars! Just let their imaginations go....that was the most fun we had when I was a kid doing sleepovers...and the popcorn fights! Now I understand why we had to stay in one room!! MY Mom didn't want a whole house full of popcorn the next day! LOL!
