8 Year Old Annual Physical Any Other Tests That I Should Request

Hi Mamas,

I was wondering if any of you ask for additional testing when your child has an annual physical. We usually have, hearing, eye-test, physical examination and that's it. Should I be asking for a urine or blood tests to catch anything else? My son is autistic and has a limited diet. I'm trying to be preventative at this point. Let me know what you ask for when seeing your pediatrician. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I would make sure to have a vision test with an ophthalmologist. My daughter was able to fool the nurse at the pediatrician's office until she was about 5 and then we found out from school that she failed the test there and had 20/200 in her left eye! She was treated with patches and glasses and is now up to 20/40 in that eye. But we have never done any blood or urine testing unless there was an indication that something might be wrong (like a UTI). I would tell the doctor that you are concerned since your son is autistic and can perhaps not tell you everything that is bothering him if it makes sense to do more comprehensive testing.

I agree on an eye test from an opthalmologist, too. We discovered a stigma in our daughter's eye that wouldn't be apparent in a pediatrician's limited testing. Also, our pediatrician does do a urine test and blood test at our daughter's physicals as a normal part of the exam. I would ask for it, what can it hurt?

My son is 10. He's been doing blood/cholesterol tests the last few years because high cholesterol runs in the family. But unless the doctor thinks there is a need then you probably don't have to do any other tests at this point.
We do speak to the pediatrician about any other issues we might feel are important like sleep, nutrition, activities, etc.

our dr does urine tests at age 5. which is about when they can pee in the cup ... my kids have never had a blood test. if the child is healthy .. there woudl be no reason to do extra tests. just traumatic for the child and most likely no problems would be found

We've never had urine or blood tests done on children unless there were symptoms of something wrong. What would you be asking them to test for?

The school does hearing and eye exams each year.

We don't even do a well-child visit each year, maybe every three years or so.

Unnecessary tests drive up medical and medical insurance costs for all of us.
