Just explain clearly and factually about menstruation. Correct terminology for body parts will be a big plus!

You are a girl, it shouldnt be that hard. I explained it to boys when they were that age I'm pretty sure... and actually probably sooner than that when they saw a box of tampax in the bathroom and asked "what are these for Mom?".
Just tell her that girls have eggs to make babies out of. And if you arent pregnant the eggs come out once a month and new ones form.
You really shouldnt need a book. Just tell her what you will know she will "get".

I never used a book with my daughters, I just explained in plain language, and used the proper names for the parts of her body, and what happens and what causes it. If you are calm and matter-of-fact about it, she won't be upset or traumatized. It's just another part of life.

You can hit the local library and ask the librarian as well. That way you can "try before you buy".

I just wonder how you can "hide" this from kids somewhat. Since we're still kinda in potty reinforcing mode and my 3.5 year old follows me to the bathroom, he "knows" what 'period' is. Cracks me up, but maybe he'll be prepared for PMS with his wife LOL!

I found a great book at a school book fair. It is by the American Girl company and the name is "The Care and Keeping of You". It talks about everything from periods to hair and skin care. My daughter and I read it together initially and I have seen that she will pull it out of her bookshelf to refer to on her own. I think it is a great book.

There was a book called "Period" that I used with my stepdaughters. See if it's still around. Very simple language and cartoon-y pictures (not too graphic) but still factual and no myths. Just not more info than they needed to know.

The important thing is that she is not afraid or grossed out. Save all those comments about cramps and bloating and PMS and misery for another time! Really!

I suggest you take a trip to the library. You may find something appropriate there. You could also try checking with your school nurse, she may have some good phamplets available.

Also, keep in mind books and phamplets are great, but my best suggestion would be to sit down and have a talk. Be sure to answer any questions she has openly and honestly.

The Care and Keeping of You by American Girl books. It's age appropriate and touches on all the subjects of puberty. My girls (9 and 8) and I have been using it as a reference for a few years and I absolutely love it.

I second the American Girl Book. The care and Keeping of You.

You can get if for like $8 at CVS. I got my daughter one for Christmas she is 7 and half and knows all about it as her Dr thinks she will get a suprise form aunt flow soon...

I know sad since she is just 7 but my daughter has all signs of early pueberty.... hair down there, funky armpits, bitty buds, blackheads.... etc.. :(

Get the book it is awesome!
