Hi all, I had a miscarriage in August and am currently 8 weeks pregnant and feel horrible. I have been pretty much bedridden for at least a week because I can't keep anything down. Even water and my meds for a bladder infection come right back up. I miss just eating! Ihave lost about 8 or so pounds. Is there something I can ask my dr for?

Also, I do have a bladder infection and just finished the meds for that. I need to call the doc in am because it is still hurting when I urinate(hence my being up at 2:30 am)Most of those came up though. Also, we did stop the prenatals and am on flinstones. I have been doing the cracker here and there but it seems to come up in spit up. Thank you to all who responded, I will post what happens.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi all, thank you so much for all of the wonderful responses. I did go to my dr last evening and we talked about reglan( I dont want to go that route) So, we decided on zofran. I picked up the generic today-much cheaper.I took my first dose 30 minutes ago and had my first glass of cranberry juice. So far, it is staying down! Yay!! I weighed myself this morning and am down a total of 13 ponds within 2 weeks. First, I just need to rehydrate myself. I can't believe how excited I am that the juice has not come back up! Thank you all and good luck to all the other pregnant mommies!

I had bad sickness with both my kids. I lost close to 20 pounds with each. I was in bed all the time and couldnt eat much at all. I had to force it to stay down. I asked my doctor for something and he just laughed and told me its a part of being pregnant. I have heard B6 helps. Good luck and it does get better, but then other issues begin.

I was just like you in all four of my pregnancies. It was horrible. For some lucky people it is only the first trimester. (i was the whole pregnancy) I ate a lot of crackers and dry cheerios. Having them by the bed for when i woke up helped a little. One thing i noticed was it helped to constantly be snacking on them. (i mean slowly, very slowly snacking...lol!) My sister was given medicine with her pregnancy last year. Maybe it is a new thing and they give meds? They never did for me...

There are medications the doctor can prescribe you and they do work. I can't remember the specific medication I was prescribed but my insurance would only pay for 15 a month. Apparently they are really expensive. Since there are more than 15 days in the month (uh, duh) I cut mine in half and it mostly worked. I was still somewhat sick but wasn't throwing up. I also used sea sickness bands (can get them at any drugstore) and I think they helped a little too.

Your OB will want to know you are this sick and can't keep anything down. I'm assuming since this includes water you aren't able to take prenatal vitamins and you certainly need to be taking your meds for the bladder infection so it doesn't get worse.

Don't tough this one out mamma, get some help so you can grow that baby!

If it's any consolation, I have heard morning sickness equals a healthy staying put babe!

Oh and I second the advice about snacking a little pretty much all the time. In my experience an empty stomach meant a sick stomach, also staying really hydrated was helpful. I think dehydration was why I'd feel so bad after waking up after a full nights sleep. And ginger (Trader Joe's has all sort of good gingery snacks).

I had the same thing happen begining of my pregnancy - I was terribly sick the first trimester, ended up losing about 10 lbs total that first 3 months. My doctor put me on zofran. It is an anit-emetic that is safe during pregnancy. They are tiny powdery tablets that just melt in your mouth. I usually felt relief within a few minutes and was able to keep food down.

Hi K.,
I'm so sorry for your loss, yet so happy for your new little miracle. Peppermint and gingersnaps were a God-send for me...even lollipops would stay down most of the time. Those were actually "prescribed" by my Dr. Also, you may want to try popcicles to attempt to keep yourself hydrated which in turn should help w/ the bladder infection. My Dr. told me the fact that you're so sick is a terrific sign that the baby's growing :) (In my case--there were twins the 2nd time around which is why I was so darn sick--overload on the horomones.) Best of luck to you and I hope you feel "normal" soon!

With my last two pregnancies, I took Vitamin B6, 25 mgs, 3 times a day. My OB actually told me to take it. They also gave me a prescription of phenegran to take as needed. It made me sleepy more than anything. The B6 DOES help, but it doesn't take it away completely.
I'd ask your doctor about the B6, but honestly if you haven't been able to keep ANYTHING down in over a week, you might need IV fluids to help you so you don't dehydrate. Then maybe the other things would help you. I'd call the OB just to be safe and talk to the nurse.

Good luck!

Hi K.,

So sorry you are so sick! I was there. My first pregnancy I was sick from week 9 to week 37 when my daughter was born. I took ZOFRAN daily (it dissolves in your mouth so there's no gagging to swallow medication). The dr. wouldn't give it to me until after the first 12 weeks to see if this was not typical morning sickness. By week 15 I had it down to a science, I took it just before work (it lasted 8 hours) and that's it. If I puked at home I was fine with that.

Also, there are dissolvable prenatal vitamins, ask for a script for those too if you need them.

Hi
I am a Mom of 3 and was SOOOOOOO sick with all them and for months and months- not just 1st trimester like so many other women. I was sick like you from morning til night and for almost my whole pregnancies. Let me start by saying---I am not big on medications and never take anything but the occasional Tylenol--- but my sickness was so bad that I was prescribed a drug called Zofran as a last resort due to being so sick. It is a drug used for those on Chemo and are sick. What is nice is that they have a version of it that dissolves on your tongue which is great for people like you and me that throw everything back up. I also had to go to the hospital for IV fluids and was even on the verge of hospitalization. It is so important to try to stay hydrated. One night I needed 4 1/2 bags of IV fluids- the nurse said they usually give 3 at the most. I took flintstones too. I am sure that you will get lots of great ideas from great women about what to eat or do to help, and I tried them all too and if I were you I would try them- but just keep in mind the medication Zofran and ask your Dr about it if nothing else seems to be working. BTW- there are other meds I tried but they were all in pill form and Zofran is the only thing that worked just due to the simple fact it dissolved. Hope you feel better soon- take it easy and try to stay hydrated. Even if you vomit- hopefully some of what you ate or drank will have been utilized and absorbed. Easier said than done, I know:)

Zofran. It's commonly prescribed for nausea and given to pregnant women all the time.

I was like you too . I had several miscarriages and when I finally carried my last two to term I was so sick the entire time I couldn't keep ANYTHING down. I got put in the hospital and got drips. The good news is that if you are proactive you can usually live without the doing that. My doc gave me Zofran (and then the generic) after trying many, many things, including waking up every two hours to eat protein. That is the only thing that has allowed me to live a semi normal life when pregnant. It is not for everyone, but I would definitely talk about options with them. They don't want you to be miserable:) Good luck!

Hi K.
Rest assure you are not alone through this. I am currently pregnant with my second. I am just as sick as I was with my first.

I am taking Zofran. I took it with my first as well. It helps a good bit. I don't throw up nearly as much. Ask your doctor about it. I took it the whole 9 months with my first to help. See if it makes a difference.

Hope this helps you a bit.

I had a misscarriage and was sick until I had the misscarriage and then when I was pregnant with my daughter I was sick 24 hours a day, I lost 20 lbs in 5 months, and being tall I didn't show from being so sick until almost 6 1/2 -7 months, my daughter was fine, although I did keep drinking even if I knew I would get sick, I would eat food after getting sick J. because that was the only moment or 2 that i felt half decent, as long as your hydrated, I think it's ok but you have to make sure you don't get dehydrated, I would take sips here and there in between getting sick, I swore I looked like a drunk every few minutes driving I would have to pull over on the way to work and get sick. Hang in there, I was paranoid from my misscarriage and being high risk and then getting sick so much, so I abused the e.r. and went once during the 1st 12 weeks J. to put my nerves aside. Oh it seems like the reason a lot of women get sick and I know it was with M. too, it that when your pregnant you create a lot of extra saliva and then makes you nauseaus and irritates your throat, and stomach, and then after the cycle starts of you being sick it seems hard to break b/c mentally when you smell or see certain things your body triggers your reaction to be sick, so I would try and stop the excess saliva with natural remedies and then maybe that will ease some of the discomfort, lollipops create saliva so I would avoid them if this is your problemm. they made M. more sick, J. a thought goodluck, the only comfort there is that unlike other pregnant women from losing weight the end of your pregnany will be nice, since atleast the sickness stops at the very end (mine went on to month 7 stopped for month 8 and came back at the end but not as drastic) if not at 12 weeks and then you won't have the pain from excess wieght.

You need to call the doctor. I would worry about getting dehydrated. You may need to go to the hospital to have an IV done. As for the prenatals once your morning sickness goes away then take them at night before you go to bed. I did that and it seemed to work for me. Hopefully in about another month you will start to feel better. I know you can drink ginger tea or chew on some ginger. One of my girlfriends did this when she was pregnant. You poor thing. Take it easy. call the doctor and take care of yourself and the little one growing inside of you.

K.,
I feel for you! I had a terrible case of hyperemesis with my 2nd baby. I, too, asked my doc for help. He submitted me to the hospital and put me on an iv of what he called his "pregnancy cocktail" - it was a mixture of saline (to rehydrate me), antihistamine (to make me drowsy so I'd sleep until my stomach settled) and I don't know what else. He had great success with breaking the cycle of vomiting with many moms-to-be who were suffering. Unfortunately, my case was really severe and I ended up on liquid food (TPN) through a central iv line. (Gee, I'm special, lol!) Before that I also went to an accupuncturist. And many women swear by ginger - crystallized ginger candy or ginger mints or even ginger ale (check a health food store). I sometimes felt relief eating frozen ice pops, too. Definitely tell your dr. if you're still experiencing UI symptoms so he can address that. Good luck. And remember, no matter what - it will end, and what you're creating makes it all worth it.

Awwww....that stinks! call your dr. right away. If the prenatal vitamins are adding to the problem, ask your dr. about taking a Flintstone! Seriously. Also when you gt up, get up V-E-R-Y slowly and try to keep crackers by your bed. I've heard a few people swear by stuff like Sour Patch Kids, but I think that would make me MORE sick! Best of luck to you.

If you are having or start having belly pain, you might want to ask your doctor to order gall bladder tests. I was constantly sick (I mean every day, ALL DAY - could keep very little down and lost lots of weight) while I was pregnant and they eventually (after first saying it wasn't)determined that it was my gall bladder. They wanted to wait until I delivered but it got so bad (life threatening) they had to remove it while I was still pregnant. There was NO negative health impact on my baby (she is a healthy teen now), though, so not to worry if that's what it ends up being - they can do amazing things to take care of you without harming the precious little one you are carrying! Good luck and God bless you and your baby!

Ask your doctor- there should be something he can give you. I don't recall the name of it but when I was pregnant with my last- 2 1/2 years ago, the doctor gave me a pill that dissolves on your tongue. He told me it's the same thing they give chemo patients and it prevents vomiting. It worked for me! Sorry I don't know the name but your dr should. I think it has just recently (last 2-3 yrs) been approved for pregnant women. It helped alot!
