8 Mo Old Spitting up - Will It Ever Stop?

My 8 month old still spits up, quite a bit some days. He'll go for a week or two and barely spit up and then he does it 10+ times a day for a few days. I've been looking for a pattern and can't find anything. He was on Zantac when he was a newborn, but there didn't seem to be any difference, so it's use was discontinued.
At 6 months, we started with cereal and have progressed into veggies and fruits from there. I always hear that when kids start eating solids, the spit up will stop. Our doctor keeps telling me that he'll outgrow it, but when? Has anyone else had a child spit up this long? My oldest quit at about 6 mos or so. Thanks in advance!

EDIT - Thanks for the advice so far. I guess I do just need to give it more time. I'll try to watch and see if it does occur the same time he is having teething issues. I hadn't thought of tracking that!
The dr. doesn't think its serious reflux b/c it doesn't cause him any discomfort - he is often smiling when he does it. We had him on soy for a few months and there was no difference. I do make all of his food, so that's not a worry.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of the advice. I am glad to know that it's not that uncommon to still be doing it. While it doesn't help with the puddles on my floor :), it does make me feel better that there is probably nothing more serious going on.

Hi G.,
My daughter is 19 mo. and still has days when she spits up. We've come to the conclusion that some days it's her teeth, and most of the time it was the milk we were giving her. She had to be put on soy formula after I stopped breast feeding, and now is drinking Lactaid. She's lactose intolerant, she drank regular milk for a while, that wasn't a good thing, then tried Silk..hated it. And now loves the Lactaid and hasn't spit up unless her teeth are bugging her..they create acid sometimes.

Um, some baby foods have some sort of acid in them to preserve the food, so maybe think about making your own baby food and freezing it so it doesn't have to be so much work at once?! I don't know, just a few ideas for you. I hope he starts feeling better soon!

I feel your pain. My son was a "happy spitter" and we put him through so much with the doctors and the best they could come up with was "acid reflux". We were on zantac, and prilosec after that and neither really helped. He was still breastfeeding, and I happened to run out of my iron supplements the docs had me on. VOILA! He stopped spitting up after every feeding.

My niece was on formula fortified with extra iron, and she was a projectile vomiter until they switched her formula.

So, look at what he's eating and see if he's getting too MUCH iron. I swear it hurts their tummies!

For what it's worth all 3 of mine still spit up a bit until 10 months old. I too would worry about the 10x a day, but in general it normally stops before their first birthday. Good luck!

I know exactly what you are going through. My son did the same thing and he didn't stop spitting up until he was almost 11 or 12 months old. Granted, it did slow down a bit once he hit 9 months and he started eating "real" food, not just baby food. Hang in there. I know you feel that it will not stop. My son was the best at the best at "happy projectile spitting up"! Just know that you are not the only one who has gone through this!

The 10 times a day concerns me. I'd bring it up with your pediatrician again, possibly get a second opinion. That really seems like a lot to me for it not to be reflux or some sort of food allergy.

My daughter continued spitting up after introducing solids when she was teething. Could that be a cause?

my oldest spit up until he was probably 15 months old. I used a lot of resolve carpet cleaner and stain stick for his clothes. We took him to the dr several times and couldn't figure it out but he did eventually grow out of it and was a very happy baby so it did't bother him. It just made a lot of extra laundry and clean up for me to do.

I'll just add, my 4th child was a long term spitter. He was about 16 months? He walked when he was 9/10 months - so that wasn't magic. He had all the normal one year old teeth. He was mostly breastfed still - sometimes that "reflux" muscle / gag reflex just doesn't mature and cooperate the way you'd like for a little while *shrug* The more food and flavors you add - the grosser the puke - that's about it. As long as he's gaining and thriving, no worry! It should end; although, I have heard stories about those who never did. That's got to be awful! Until you notice it better - I'd steer him away from foods you don't want to clean up :)

My experience and advice is from 32 years ago so take it or leave it. My daughter was a spitty baby and she was weaned from the breast to a cup and solid food by the time she was 5 months old. She didn't cut her first tooth until the day before her first birthday. Because she was spitty, I did give her formula out of the cup instead of the recommended (at the time) 2% milk, because formula spit up doesn't smell as disgusting as milk does. When questioned, my daughter's pediatrician said that she would probably quit the spitting up when she started walking and was not putting pressure on her tummy (either lying on it or sitting bent at the tummy). Whether the dr. was right or it was just a coincidence, I don't know. But my daughter started walking a month before she cut her first tooth and the spitting up did stop shortly after she was walking. She is now a healthy 32 year old with no known allergies. Good luck with your boys, enjoy them.

The little boy I took care of had the same problem. His deal was that he would throw up when he ate to much. We had to seriously watch how much he ate or drank. One or two bites to much and here it comes. He also was on Zantac when he was an infant. He is 4 now and does just fine. I think he was close to 18 months when it slowed down. I would try watching how much goes in and regulate it that way. It may mean feeding more often, but smaller portions. I hope this was somewhat helpful. Good luck and God Bless.
