8 Mo Old - Fussy, Crabby Night Wakings. Pls Help. Happy Baby MIA.

Our 8 mo old is exclusively breast fed. He WILL NOT take formula. Believe me, I've tried.

He is our third. So I've been around the block. He has no fever, no cold, nothing "wrong" as far as I can tell. Recently he has been irritable and will only fall asleep for ME, not even my husband can get him down when he's cranky. More often than not, I end up having to nurse him to get him to sleep. Days are better, but even then, he's been more irritable lately...sometimes not napping in the afternoon which leads to a LONG night.

I don't feel or see teeth buds, but he has NO teeth yet. He has been drooling and chewing a lot the past month, but still no teeth. I have no idea what the "problem" could be.

We are up about 4 times a night. Sometimes for an hour!

With two older children and a husband who needs to get sleep for work, I am at my wits end. I can't let the baby CIO! I have tried not picking him up but he just screams. I rock him and shush him to drowsy, but not asleep, try to put him down and it starts all over again and again. I reluctantly give in and nurse him and THEN he'll go down.

I have tried to get him to eat more and nurse more during the day but he turns away.

I don't know if it's something as simple as being newly interested in his big sisters! He's chatting and having so much fun during the day I don't think he wants to stop! LOL

I'd really love to get my happy baby back. Although he's never slept through the night, I can deal with ONE night feeding.

Thanks for your suggestions Mamas!

I'd take him in to the doc and see if he might have an ear infection... If he's acting a lot different than normal then usually there IS a reason. And my daughter NEVER ran fevers when she had ear infections, the only way we knew was because she got so cranky! (she ended up having to get tubes cause she had so many) And it would explain why its only at night because it hurts their ears to lay down... (and it makes them feel better to suck so that might be why he wants to nurse)
Good luck!

My daughter was sort of the same way. I sang to her and no one was able to keep her alseep even if they sang to her. So i recorded myself and everyone (hubby, sitters) would play this while putting her down and Continued playing it for about an hour after they put her in bed or if she woke up when it wasn't feeding time. AND THIS WORKED LIKE A CHARM. Maybe you can try this & see if it will help.
And the cute thing about this, she is 14 and once in while she will ask me to sing to her if she can't sleep. My heart melts every time!!
happy slumbers to u and the baby

Sounds like one or both of you need a bit more calcium. I have 3 kids and breastfed all of them for 16-18 months. I found that when they started waking or getting super fussy, they were just exhausted from the lack of quality sleep since they needed more calcium. I use Lifetime or Bluebonnet liquid calcium - blueberry flavor and start with 1 teaspoon each night. It takes about a week to really see a huge difference.

I also take Apex CalMag Plus each night and just increased my dosage if they got that way. I get it at my holisitic doctor's office, but was also able to find it at www.worldlifesupplements.com . Stuff is cheap and contains 7 different calciums, rather just crappy calcium carbonate, like most calciums.

Trust me....you'll both feel a ton better. Most of my friends have done this and it's worked for them as well.

My asd son did this although I couldn't comfort him so the fact you can nurse him and then he will go down is a good thing. Looking back over my son's records I see the timing of this behavior was close after vaccinations. Perhaps he is just hungry though.

I'm not sure why you'd even try formula. He knows what's best:)

I agree with the PP, could be his ears. My boys didn't run fevers with ear infections, they just got cranky. But, I'm guessing it's teething, even if you don't see signs. Most babies have teeth by now, so maybe they are having trouble coming up and that's why he's so cranky?

I'd say don't bother letting him cry, just pick him up, nurse him, and know that it will pass eventually. This too shall pass, right?
