Hey Moms..

My 7 month old...has been sleeping through the night since he was 3 or 4 months old. I can't remember. Last week he was getting up earlier than usual (5am)
This week, he has been getting up in the middle of the night. I usually let him cry for a bit but it's no use...so I tumble down the steps to get a bottle and I feed him and put him back in the crib...then he goes back down till 7/8am...and he's fine/// Last night in particular he had rolled on his tummy and was pretty upset about that...and he is also teething cut two bottom teeth last week...

Anything?

Thanks.

So What Happened?

I have been giving him a little bit more solid food with feedings...seemed to help a lot and he didn't end up waking up. I will give him some tylenol if he is having a bad night going down (if his teeth hurt) and that seemed to help. Thanks for your responses.

If your son is teething, this isn't a big surprise. If you don't want to get him in the habit of eating "food" in the night, try putting some cold water in a bottle -- that'll help sooth his gums, without adding a feeding. But if he doesn't like that, I wouldn't worry about it. Let him enjoy his bottle, and once he's done teething, he'll probably go back to sleeping through the night anyway.

I would increase the amount of his pre bedtime meal. If he is waking up hungry then he needs more during normal hours. His teething could effect his sleeping habits since his ears could hurt when he lays down (this is caused by teething). My son's appetite would decrease during teethng until I started refrigerating his food.I'm guessing the cold made his teeth feel better and that's why he ate it better. You could also try a dose of Motrin or Tylenol about 1/2 hour before bed if you think the teething is causing him to awake. My opinion is his is hungry since he takes a bottle and returns to sleep.

How much solid food is he getting in a day? He should be eating at least 3 meals a day of baby food as long as your doc agrees. Also, the teething may have caused him to lose his appetite, maybe that is why he's hungry. Unfortunately, since they can't tell us we can only guess!2 weeks ago my son, who is 11mo old, had an ear infection and slight croup. He was not eating very much, so we had to do a bottle at 2 or 3am for 3 nights!Once his appetite came back, we were able to stop the bottle.
It's hard, but if they are hungry we have to feed them! Try more food during the day, maybe even add a snack closer to dinner! Good luck! :)

Feed him more all day long! It is the trick. Not just a thickened bottle before bed, but more food all day long, even if he doesn't seem hungry. Feed him as much as he'll possibly eat at all times, and he won't wake up at night. I learned this from my sister with 12 kids. She had them all sleeping through the night by 3 months. It has been like magic with my two. It takes a few days for their body to realize it's gotten more food and is really full, but then voila. Sleeping all night.

Have you tried tylenol or something for the teething? He is probably waking up w/pain and wanting a bottle to sooth that. Does he use a binky? Maybe try that or one of those teething rings?? Good luck! Teething is awful for those little ones!

Had the exact same problem with my twins. It started happening when they were teething, also. My ped told me to cut down on the amount I was giving them in the middle of the night and wean them down but if they didn't get at least 3 oz, they would get mad and not go back to sleep. I never came up with a solution, but after a few months, they no longer are consistently getting up in the middle of the night. Occasionally - maybe twice a week, but not every night any more. I really think the pain from their teeth woke them up and once they were awake they realized they were hungry.

You may need to try giving him something more before you put him down to bed. He's growing, so his appetite may be getting bigger.

If he's cutting teeth that might explain it too! Do you give him a cool teething ring when he seems to need one? You might have to ask his doctor or a nurse if infant's tylenol is ok for him for those times. There's probably some gels out there in the dental section of a store for that now too.

I hope this helps!
