Ok so today I found out by DWS that my son's Social was stolen. Fun for me. I've reported it and have requested a Social Security Statement, and am about to go and report it to a credit buero. Is there anything else I can do?? Also now that this has happened I really want to do Lifelock. . . but is it worth it??

Lifelock had to pay the government a fine for something recently ... misleading advertising, I think. I would do a Google search before investing any money in this product.

I dont know whether you saw on the news this week, that the director of lifelock has had his identity stolen 9 times - just to prove that it was pretty much worthless

It's good that you caught it this early. A teacher at my son's school had this happen to her daughter. They didn't find out about it till the girl was starting collage and was applying for education loans. They were still having to regularly clear things up with the IRS and Social Security 10 years later. Document everything and keep it forever.
I haven't heard enough about Lifelock to know whether it's a good thing or not. I think I'd want to hear what Consumer Reports and the Better Business Bureau has say about them before I send them any money.

Lifelock is a scam, you pay a fee for something that you can do yourself.
Once the whole mess is cleaned up, put a permanent credit freeze on you child's record with all 3 credit reporting agencies (there are two types, a permanent and a temporary one). I believe you have to pay a small fee later to remove it, once your child get's old enough for credit, but it is a fraction of what you would pay for lifelock over the course of let's say the next 15 years.
In addition pull his credit report once a year to make sure everything is all right.

It really isn't too much work... you can do it!

Thanks for asking the question. I've often thought about it myself. Guess I'll be pulling credit reports for my kids from now on. I hope you get everything straightened out.

Glad you caught the problem. I don't have Lifelock but my understanding is that they watch for your SS# to come up during credit apps for CC cards, loans, phones, etc. then they notify you. You can then report to the agency as a fraud (or maybe they will do that for you). Then if you do have your identity stolen and they didn't catch it they will help you fix it free of cost. I think the idea is to find the problem before it ruins all of your credit. I don't think it actually guarentees that your # won't be stolen...I don't think any company could feasibly do that.

you may want to check with your home owners policy. After we had some mail stolen I found out for under 10.00 a month we could get ID theft coverage for everyone in our house. I think it's a lot cheaper than life lock I'm sure it's not as much coverage, but it is an affordable option.

How did you find out it was stolen? I have tried to run credit reports on my kids but it says they are not old enough to do it.

I would not trust lifelock. It sounds like you are keeping a close eye on things anyway.
