7 Month Old Shakling Head Back and Fourth

My son just turned 7 months old and he's been shaking his head back and forth in a "no" motion. I was just wondering if this is anything to be concerned about. he does it when hes laying down and sitting up. He plays in his jump ups for about an hour a day and he also has been jumping in his sleep and tossing his head back and forth. He's been doing this for about 1 month maybe his bouncer has something to do with it?

What can I do next?

Hi K.,

My son did that when he was teething at that age. It was nothing to be concerned about. It's really just a soothing motion for them.

Completely normal and the night-time jumping/shaking head, normal, too. Kiddos tend to try to practice their new-found mobility/movements while asleep. We tend to dream about things we experience and so do they.

As long as all other milestones are being met, nothing to worry about.

My daughter did this too....I think it is pretty normal. Even a little boy I babysat for did it.
I asked my daughters doctor about it and they said it is part of development and new sensations, etc.
You can always check with your son's doctor for reassurance at his next appointment.

If you have insurance, I think a $20 copay is well worth peace of mind. Why not call your doc, describe what he is doing while awake and about his fitful sleep and see if it warrants an exam?

best of all things to you and your family!

Completely normal!! Most kids go through this phase. They are learning new things to do with their bodies and its a new sensation. Don't worry! Mine did this too!

I would talk to your doctor about this. It may be just a phase, but it is something to watch.

My son did this around the same age (now 13 months). I think it's a new skill and an interesting sensation, so they like to practice it. It seems weird to us, but I think it's normal behavior.

Try it yourself. It is like a baby version of a roller coaster or swinging high on a swing. My guess is that he is doing it for the thrill.

Hi, I run a in home daycare and I have been seeing this for years. I actually have a 7 month old girl in daycare and she does the exact same thing. They love to jump and move and she seems to be always moving. It is totally normal they will grow out of it in few months, my little boy that is now 2 did (he did the same thing about 7-8 months).

Hope that helps

I have twin daughters and when one of my twins started to do this the other followed... (it started about 7-8 months) I did ask the Ped @ their 9 month visit if this was normal or if I should be concerned, he said it was part of their development and that a lot of infants and toddlers do this... They are 1 now and they still continue to do it...they laugh about it to eachother and when we say "no, no" they shake their head from side to side as well... I wouldn't be concerned unless your child is hurting himself or acting abnormal. If it does bother you though, I would also recommend to ask your Ped just for piece of mind.

My little guy did this too! Don't worry, mom, nothing to worry about. They see you shaking your head or moving it around and Wow! They can control their own head finally and do what momma and dadda do! :)
Don't worry, it will pass and he'll move on to other things! :)

If this behavior will not change in a months or so I would suggest to take your baby to see pediatrician. Sometimes baby do that just to concentrate but it shouldn't last for long time.

My daughter is 6 1/2 months and she does this as well. I haven't seen her do it when she sits up but when she's laying down she loves to do. I just think it's part of her developing.

Even if this behavior is totally normal and unrelated to the bouncer, I would stop or greatly decrease the time in the jumpup. They are really not good for babies for many reasons and can lead to spinal problems.

have you made an appointment with a doctor yet? sometimes, this can be a sign of an inner ear infection.

My sons shook their head 'No' when they were around this age too (I have two, 20months and 3 yrs). My Ped MD said it was totally normal...just something new to do that may feel good, or different, and/or fun! No worries!

My almost 6 month old just started doing that this week. Totally normal! My now toddler did it too but I don't remember the age for sure. We started using our jumper about a month ago, but I don't feel like there's a connection. She started sitting up last week and I feel like that's a more likely connection.
