7 Month Old Refusing Sleep

I've been watching a 7 month old little boy for 2 weeks now. I have him from 10am-8pm, so I have to do all naps, baths, etc. He's an adorable baby when he's happy, but he has some issues with excema, gas, and he's teething. Poor thing! This week, I have given him his bottle, teething meds, gas drops and tylenol before his first nap and when I lay him down, he screams (not cry), SCREAMS at the top of his lungs. I've tried to let him cry it out, I've tried rubbing his tummy, laying down with him, everything! He will literally scream until he's so exhausted that he'll pass out while he's mid-bite of some baby food. Sometimes I can get him to sleep on my lap but as soon as I try to get up, he starts screaming again. I just don't know what to do. I've never met a child that fought sleep so hard and I've been watching kids for a LONG time! I have him 6 days a week and his mom has no advice for me. She's a new mom and rarely has him since she works so much. He's on similac sensitive and eats jarred baby food just fine. Help me!

What can I do next?

His parents are self absorbed idiots. Why don't they take a child with eczema off a cows milk based formula and sugar. He's have an immediate reaction to it.
He needs to see a homeopath for his illnesses and allegies.
She'd better take a day off from work to spend it on the net educating herself about his condition and making an appointment with someone who can really heal her child. AND THAT IS NOT THE ALLOPATHIC M.D.
Have you not dealt with allergic children before? Go on the net too. He might be allergic to the laundry soap you use or your cat. I hope you don't have a house cat because you cannot keep the place clean enough that the dander doesn't cause an allergic reaction in that very sensitive boy.

Hi Bethany,

My son had eczema and gas as well however it was related to a food allergy which we didn't find out about until later. He was also very uncomfortable when he was napping due to his itching skin as well as gas from the food. It's possible that there is something else that is annoying him which is causing the eczema and gas. If that is the case then he might continue to have issues until that issue is resolved. Once we understood the foods that were causing the gas and increasing the eczema break outs he became a much happier baby.

For babies that have eczema their skin care is pretty important. For my son we did daily cleanings of his skin with a cetaphil gentil cleanser..just rubbed it on his skin and wiped it off with a baby wipe (not scented). I put lotion on his skin 3 times a day - also cetaphil lotion for sensitive skin. Keeping his skin moisturized with the right products totally helped as well and kept me one step ahead of his breakouts if they occurred.

I later realized that he was so unhappy when trying to sleep because he was so itchy! It might not be the same with the baby that you're watching but thought it was worth a mention in case it might help.

Good luck and hope everything works out.

He sounds over medicated-but switch gears on him-instead of the focus being on how to get him to sleep-figure out how to keep him awake-he also seems to have a bit of separation anxiety-a seven month old should be able to be put to bed awake and go to sleep on their own. You may need to train him to deal with this. I know people need to work-blah, blah, blah-but 6 days a week-all bloody day??? It's too much-

I understand mom is doing what she can. Not everyone can find a way to stay home and research everything under the sun. Researching things takes LOTS of time... months sometimes.

I have "excema" too, only it is funny how it goes away as soon as I am not exposed to Aloe Vera.... Of course now that I haven't touched Aloe for several years I have a rather sever reaction, but it is so much better. FYI, aloe vera is in ALL brands of disposable diapers... same with female pads... so cloth M. be the way to go. All my kids are allergic too. Aloe is in most forms of laundry detergent too.

My 2nd child screamed like you describe. I breast fed him and tried all the diet changes to fix it, nothing worked... he just screamed for 4 months and then it ended as abruptly as it started.

I would recommend to alternate tylenol and ibuprophen. I would also try some hylands teething tablets or gel. They are natural and help with the pain and help with the mood. If you have a baby swing put him in that. May be some music to help soothe him. Try some classical music and see if it helps. For the gas pains, try not just rubbing his tummy but also doing the bicycle motion. He may also miss his mom and he is too little to vocalize it.God bless you for being a good family care provider.
