7 Month Old Poop and Solids

Yet another baby poop question! My 7mo old is breastfed and we've been doing solids since she was 5 mo. (She's got a great appetite!) I'm trying to get a sense of what "normal" poop is... she now goes 2 sometimes 3 x's a day but they're usually pretty small lumps. It's the consistency of play dough so not super hard like pellets... just not soft and loose like her stools were when she was only getting breast milk. She seems to have to push a good bit to go but she's not in any pain. Does that sound like she may be constipated or just still adjusting to her solids? Thanks for the help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I know there's not really a "normal" since all kids are different but it's nice to hear other mom's experiences!!!

Mine had actually the hard/pellet poops right when he started solids (at the same time I had to start him on formula - very constipating double whammy). If yours does get the pellets, I would suggest giving him some baby food prunes (just a little bit to start!) to loosen things up. Otherwise, sounds like she's doing great!

I would think her digestive system is just adjusting to the solids. as long as the poop isn't hard, I'd think she's just fine! :-)

My 7 month old boy does the same thing - just adjusting to the solids. I was told that constipation is more pelet like and is painful.

Yogurt! I swear by it! My 9 month old has always had BM issues and when I started her on solids I had the same experience although she would only go maybe every second day.
I started feeding her a few teaspoons of yogurt in the morning with her cereal and it is my belief that the bacteria in the yogurt keeps things much smoother.. for lack of a better word.

It is just her adjusting to the solids from being a breastfed baby.

Hi,
Usually the breast milk will make it more soft and now that you are introducing solid foods, it just might be that. If you can and if she it's it give her more fiber, maybe some flavored oldmeal, a little container of prunes (the dessert ones from gerber or any other brand). The good thing is that she is not in pain, that is your focus, to keep her away from pain. If she was constipated, trust me you would know! the pain is bad and she would really strain herself.
Hope this helps.
I.

My son was like your daughter - fully breastfed with solids at 4 months on. He always had the looser stools of a breastfed baby. Our daughter was formula fed for medical reasons, and she always had looser stools, too.

We're actually battling encopresis right now (her holding her feces in). She'll be two this weekend, and we've been battling it a few weeks now.

Solids will firm-up the stools a little bit, but if you begin to see that they're really dry, I'd call the pediatrician (I'd also suggest asking at your next well-baby visit). You may need to offer more fibery foods to alter the consistency.

Isn't it amazing what we'll talk about as Moms that would have been taboo a few years earlier?
