Hello women and fellow mothers,
I have never gone through something like this before. My 7 month old son just started #1 baby foods and is constipated everytime. I try to help him go number 2 by placing his knees up to his stomach but he still screams in pain. I don't know what it is. But he was fine with rice cereal. Is it just that he isn't ready yet? And it's not bannana's causing it either. Because I haven't tried it yet!!! Is this something I should talk to his doctor about or is this okay because his body is getting use to the baby food.
Thanks for the response,
Anything would be helpful.
M.

I would try cutting back on the solids or even stop them all together.

My kids never liked the baby cereals. I just ground up Cheerios. Well, until the 4th baby. Then I didn't do much in the way of "spoon feeding" because I was too busy. When he could get the food in his mouth himself, he started solid foods. He's 3 now, and a very healthy eater.

Add a little Kayro syrup to the food and he will soon be going to the bathroom.

have you tried mixing just a little of the jar food in with the cereal his body needs time to adjust to the jar so he may not be ready for a full jar mixing a little with his cereal will help his body adjust and keep him from getting him backed up try that for a few more weeks just a little of the jar in rice cereal for his meals should help

Hi,

My son really struggled with constipation right after he started solids, and we tried every home-remedy in the book--grape juice, karo syrup etc, no bananas--just everything. Nothing helped.

The amount he suffered took an incredible toll on all of us. My husband and I would weep while he screamed and strained to poo after we gave him a suppository. Even the cat would run around screaming in response to his cries.

Then we took him to a pediatric gastroenterologist, and she put him on a laxative called "miralax", and it is a miracle. We still have to give him a suppository 1-2x a month, but he was just unable to go the bathroom on his own before at all.

Please go see a specialist, our regular pediatrician wasn't all that helpful.

Good Luck, R.

i know a little about it my son was the same way and the dr. Ended up putting my son on a laxitive to help him go . So if i was you i would try giving him some baby apple or grape juice to see if that will work and if that doesn't work then i would have him checked and see what the dr says about it .

My son had the same problems when he started solids too. Try a little karo syrup in the bottle, that usually helps. You may have to use a little everyday until his body gets used to the new foods. I used to put some in his bottle first thing in the morning with 2oz of formula and then feed him his solid foods. I only fed him solids first thing in the morning and then once his body was used to it we increased the food to twice a day. Good luck.

Try switching him to oatmeal cereal....my son is now 10 months but he had the same problem. I switched him to oatmeal and that seemed to help. You also might want to try and give him apple juice, or prunes (#1 food) Hope this helps

I would keep an eye on him, and if it persists, then talk to his doctor. It is probably his body getting used to the food. My daughter had some difficulties at first, we tried a few different things. You can try prunes, a friend told me try pear juice, and of course the bicycling of the legs.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

M.,

I ran into something similar with my fourth child. When he was a month old he would cry until he would cry himself to sleep. I told the doctor about it and I thought maybe he was colic. Nothing I did ever helped. Later I tried Soy milk because that was a problem I had with my third child, but that didn't work. When he was one year old it got worse. When he would try to have a bowel movement he would scream and force his legs together and I would take his legs and put them gently into his chest to help like you mentioned. This would never work because he would fight me and just scream worse. The doctor told me I wasn’t hurting him and I was just making him do something he didn’t want to do. My son would go four or five days without a bowel movement and spend most of the days crying and just wanted me to sit with him. After trying suppositories like my doctor recommended I took him to see a specialist. It turned out he was allergic to milk and soy. They put him on special medicine which did help. Now he is four and has no problems with milk or being constipated. This doesn’t sound like this is what your child has, but I would definitely talk this over with your baby's doctor since it could be a few different things. I've never had any problem with my children when I added baby food so I don't think that would be why. I wish you luck and hope this is just a passing thing for your child. Let me know if you like how everything turns out.

We had the same problem when starting #1 foods. We either gave baby 3oz of water with 1 TBs of brown sugar in it. Or a 4 oz of Gerber apple juice.

Hi M.,
Just wanted to put my two cents in on this O.--I found that pear jiuce worked MUCH better than apple juice for my son's constipation. Also, you could try 1/2 pear mixed with 1/2 prune juice. Good luck. It will do the trick!
Denise
p.s. O. more thing for stomach discomfort in a baby (my mom taught me) was to warm a habnd towel in the microwave (not too hot!!!) and hold it over his tummy while you hold, walk or rock. Must feel very good because it would calm my son fast!
