My 7 month old has been constipated for a week now and I wanted to see if any of you have suggestions to relieve him? I have stopped giving him 3 meals a day and just giving him 2. I eliminated apples/bananas and rice cereal (only veggies, pears, prunes and oatmeal). I have increased h20 and breastfeedings. ???

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your suggestions. I gave him some prunes, pears and veggies and took away the apple/banana and cereal for 4 days. It worked. He is back to normal. I am for sure going to keep prunes around just in case. THANKS AGAIN

I feed a jar of prunes every other day, and a little diluted apple juice (1 oz juice to 4 oz water) and this seems to keep him "right as rain." the cereal/bananas and applesauce can bind them up a bit. My son is also breastfed.

Hope this helps!

Try putting dark Kuro Syrup in with some formula. It needs to be a good amount too. That seemed to work for my son when this happened to him. If it is really bad ask your dr. about an enma. I think my dr. had us us Fleet, and give just a very small amount.

have you tried regular, quick-cooking oats? i normally give my 8-month-old the gerber baby oatmeal, but if it seems like things are still moving too slowly, i feed her the real stuff instead, which seems to help by the next day. of course, it's lumpier and your baby might not want it, but it's worth a try.

my son was around that age when he would have a bowel movement once a week. i tried prune juice, massage, laxative suppositories, and more. The doctor said it was normal since he was breastfeeding, So i just relaxed and waited. He grew out of it after a month or so.

Have you tried prunes or apple juice. You can mix prune juice with formula/breastmilk to add to flavor.
Something that has worked well for my kids but they are a little older is pancake syrup or Karo syrup (in the baking aisle). Just 1-2 tablespoons, and they are both fairly sweet so the kids tend to like it.
One more thing would be take his temperature rectally and it will stimulate him to go.
Good luck

we gave our daughters pumpkin which seemed to clear it up. or, mix prune baby food in with his cereal. as a last resort you could try glycerin suppositories, but i'd check with your ped's nurse first.

1)massage tummy clockwise only!!! and add probiotics to bottle.
2)Gerber prunes and/or prune juice mixed with apple juice!!!
3)Magnesium citrate 1/8 of a teaspoon in juice...
4)Xylitol 1/4 teaspoon in bottle at night(corn sugar)

Start with No. 1 and if that does not work add the next and so forth!!! Love, G.. :0)

My great grandmother told me once when my little one was constipated to put a teaspoon of light karro syrup into a baby bottle with about 4-6 oz warm water and feed it to her. It worked for me.

T.B,
I am going through the same thing but my son is 2 years old. My son is a picky eater so I have to hide the prunes in his food, but sometimes he notices and won't eat. He likes Yogurt and some of the yogurt we give him from Trader Joe's has Tapioca starch in them and that works for my son. But I have it where he is now going #2 every day 1 time a day. he was holding it for 2 days and it's still hurting him when he goes and now at the age he is, he knows he can hold it but when he does go it does hurt. I am trying to give him stuff to soften it for him. I have tried "Benifiber" in his milk, tasteless fiber. That seems to help him, I would actually check with his Ped to make sure, but if you are trying most of the things the Dr will say "Water, Juice" and also massage works.. Warm baths' too. I wouldn't recommend laxitive or sticking anything in his rectum to make him go. I read up about it and they say if they haven't gone #2 in 4 days is when to worry.. But juice and water work best and prunes, pears, veggies..
Also every diaper change I put Vaseline down there to help ease out for him too.
Good luck
