7-Year-old Boy Having Accidents

When my son was potty training and for the following year (until he was 4 or so), he tended to be prone to accidents involving pee, both at home and at school. Then the issue went away, until recently. He started first grade this fall and has had several accidents at school as well as at home. He makes it to the toilet, but in some cases emits a little more urine after he has started pulling up his pants, or in other cases starts the flow before he gets his pants all the way down and thus soaks them. We never scold, shame or punish him, of course; I'm just worried about whether this is normal. I have a routine conference with the teacher scheduled this week and will ask her more about it then.

I wondered if it could be some kind of bladder or urinary infection (do boys even get those?), but he has no other signs - no fever, feels fine, no pain, urine is appropriate in color, etc. Anyone else had experience with this? Is a trip to the doc in order or is it something we can help correct at home?

Thanks for any advice you have.

normal for a boy being so busy in school waiting too long to go to the potty. so he starts peeing before pants are down.. or is in such a hurry to pull up pants pees more in the pants..

i would do a quick talk about it .. take time to go potty.. but I bet it is part of adjustment to first grade.

Peeing the bed at night can be normal but I am not sure during the day at school is 'normal'. I wonder if he is just too busy playing, too excited, etc to make it to the bathroom. Especially the part when you say that he emits more urine after pulling up his pants. I would sit him down and either make a deal with him, or make a chart. Tell him that you ask two things of him: That he stand there and push to make sure it is all out before pulling up his pants, and that he goes to the bathroom the minute he feels he has to go. Talk to his teacher and make sure she allows him to go to the bathroom whenever he needs to in the beginning. Offer your son a reward if he goes all week without an accident during the day. Do not include bed time b/c that is a lot harder for him.
If he cannot do it and he truly is trying, I would take him to the doctor. He may have an infection. Ask him if it hurts when he pees, that may give you some indication as well. good luck.

If he hasn't been having accidents for the past 3 years, and now all of a sudden he is, I think that warrants a trip to the pediatrician, just to make sure everything is ok.

There could be a lot of reasons. Some more serious ones like pre-diabetes. Other less serious ones like constipation, which puts pressure on the bladder and makes control more difficult. Or stress, if there is an issue at school. I'd talk it out with the doctor just to make sure.

I think that a trip to the dr. may be in order just to make sure all is well...he may just be waiting too long after he gets the urge to pee, thus the flow starting before he gets his pants down. But just to make sure, I would see his pediatrician to out rule any problems.
