Hi Moms..
Yesterday I noticed a spot of blood on my baby's shirt..right around her nipple area. I didn't think much of it figuering I must have had a cut on my hand somewhere or my husband did, and it got on there from one of us. Then later on in the day I noticed it again so I checked her nipple area and gently squeezed them, and nothing. This evening lo and behold, blood on her shirt again! This time, when I gently squeezed the right one (where the blood was) a little blood came out! Has this ever happened to anyone?!?
I am totally freaked out.
I called my pediatrican, and he said it could be an infection and if was still happening tomorrow to bring her in and he'll check her out.
What in the heck could it be? I know babies can have a surge of hormones, but I thought that was just after birth when they are coming off the mother's hormones. Not at 7 1/2 months! Her nipple isn't red, doesn't look irritated or have any lumps under it, and it doesn't seem painful at all. Please moms, if you had this happen to you, or know of anyone that did please let me know! I'd appreciate it!
So, we took her to her pediatrician and he said it was one of 2 things. 1. is that sometimes babies can have extra tissue in that area and it gets engorged with blood. There is nothing to do for it and it ususally goes away in about 2 months. 2. Is that she has a bleeding disorder. (which we all know she doesn't because she clots fine after her shots and has had a few scratches or scrapes and has never had a problem)
So, he's sending her for an ultrasound, which we'll get this week. And if it doesn't go away in a couple of months, we'll go for some blood testing. I'm sure it will just go away on it's own, but gosh, what a scary time I had until I took her to her doctor! He seemed very sure of the reasons why it is happening. Thank you all for your concern~ :)

Don't everybody have a cow. I can't believe all the responses so far have not been familiar with this. My 10 mo. old boy just started bleeding from his right nipple. I have read a bunch of midwifery/breastfeeding/natural mothering books, and had midwives help me birth all 3 of my kids at home. I can't remember from which source I had read/heard it, but I knew it was pretty normal. So I did a simple web search and saw about a million responses. Most other sites like this have tons of mothers writing in saying "me too". The scary thing is that most conventional doctors responses is that they have never heard of it!! Even some of the medical sites of case studies and such say things like "very rare" and "a few documented cases", HAH! How is it that a mother of 3 chef has heard of it a couple times in passing and most pediatricians whose job it is to study infant/child health have not?! From my research it seems most often the pediatrician suggests an ultrasound which rarely reveals a benign duct issue that resolves soon after, more rarely reveals a tiny benign swelling behind it - also resolves itself, and usually reveals nothing. Most cases resolve themselves in a week to 2 mo. without treatment. The scary thing is what happens when the parents and ped. are too scared of what is not understood and they proceed with surgical procedures like removal of nipple and ducts or more often I read of mastectomies, revealing benign duct disorders that resolve without treatment were present and causing permanent psychological and physical damage!
A., I don't know where you live, but I would not wait. I would take her to the doctor right away. Ask about seeing a specialist and request testing. I would not take this lightly. You have to be absolutely cautious and do the safest thing for your baby. If you haven't googled blood coming from nipples, there are a couple of possibilities you should consider. Please let us know what the doctor says.
Sorry, I never heard of this before, but please definately take her to the pediatrician to get it checked out. Let us know what happens.
O wow, i wish i could give advice on this, i hope everything is well with your baby. Please let us know what the doctor says about it.
