Hey mamas!

I have a few questions. My DD is 7 1/2 months old. She's been eating solids since she was 4 months. She's eating 3 meals a day. My question is, do you ladies breastfeed/bottle feed your babies first then give the solids? Or the other way around? My DD has always been a spitter and still spits up quite often. Although her pedi says its not reflux since she's a happy spitter and is gaining weight and everything! Soo, how long do you wait to give you baby solids after a bottle? Do you give solids and bottle together?

I usually feed her a 6 oz bottle at 7am then solids (2 tbsp of cereal & 1/2 jar fruit, stage 2) then again solids at 11am (1/2 jar veggies, stage 2, and a snack like cheese puffs or something) then at 1130am another 6 oz bottle. Another 6 oz bottle at 3pm-330pm. Then dinner at 5pm-530pm (2 tbsp cereal, 1/2 jar veggies and 1/2 jar fruit) then a 7 oz bottle at 7pm. Too much food? Should I feed bottle first then the solids? What can I do so she doesn't spit up so much?

Thanks ladies, sorry this got soooo long!!

What can I do next?

At this age, you want the food to be exciting, so it's important for baby not to be full on breast milk. Have you tried nursing when the baby wakes, waiting an hour to feed a meal of solids and then a little time for baby to move around (b/c poops can sometimes come on after a meal) and then a nap. Hopefully this suggestion will work for you :) www.weelicious.com

I usually would do breastfeeding and a solid meal feeding at least an hour apart, so it wasn't necessarily like I did one or the other. Our schedule was something like this:

6:30 a.m. - nurse
8:00 a.m. - breakfast (solids)
10:00 a.m. - nurse
12:00 p.m. - lunch (solids)
1:00 and/or 4:00 - nurse
6:00 p.m. - dinner (solids)
7:30 p.m. - nurse

Hello, When our babies were eating solids, we gave them the bottle or nursed them after eating. This way they get the solids. It sounds like you are doing a great job. Keep up with what you are doing.
Good luck with your precious little girl.

I always did milk before solids until a year old. I was doing it wrong at first but had a lactation consultant tell me that it was very important to do milk first. Part of that is because I was breastfeeding (to keep milk supply up), so that wouldn't apply to bottle feeding. But the main thing was that you want baby's primary source of nutrition to be breastmilk or formula and not the solids. If they fill up on cereal they don't get the nutrition they need from the milk/formula. I did solids about 20 mins after milk, so as not to space them apart too much.

Now, I don't know if that is going to make a difference to help keep her from spitting up. Mine never really spit up. My nephew spit up like crazy until he was a year old, and nothing my sister did really changed that except time. Formula first or food first didn't make a difference. His wasn't reflux, just an underdeveloped valve, and it went away on its own when he outgrew it.

Good luck!

I alternated. Bottle, food, bottle, food, bottle, snacks in between and then if my son was still hungry he got another bottle. Breastmilk or Formula is the main source of nutrition for that age. I believe the daily requirement for formula/breastmilk is 18-24 oz until age 1. I learned the hard way lol when my son turned one to start feeding him more solid foods. Your schedule sounds fine to me :)

Oh and btw, my son "happily" spit up too until he was about 10 months or so... one day *poof* it just stopped ;)
