6Wks After Birth

I had my son the end of December via c-section. He was a big boy weighing in at 10lbs 6oz. I know that you are supposed to bleed for around six weeks possibly more. I thought that mine was slowing down because it was only slightly pink with little to nothing on the pads, but it's gotten worse. It is pure blood and a lot of it. The thing is I did start working out again last week pretty hard so I'm wondering if this could be because of that. that's my only guess. I have been having some dizzy spells which isn't like me and I'm wondering if it could be because I am bleeding quite a bit.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your advice! I only experienced the dizzy spells for about one day and then they went away. I honestly think those were from not eating right. So once I changed my eating habits they went away. I know that people that had c-sections recover at different speeds and I felt completely 100% normal at 3wks but obviously waited a couple more weeks before working out again. I feel like I know my body and what it can take and what's too much. I did go to my six wk appt on tues and my ob said everything looks great. I was just having my period lol. All that worrying for nothing! He also said I've recovered better than any of his other c-section patients haha. I think he probably said that because I gained 80lbs with hayden and i only have 10 more left to lose. :) Thanks for all your help and concern.

"I did start working out again last week pretty hard".....I hope to God you got an ok from your Dr. to do this. 6 weeks is not very long after a C-section to be "working out pretty hard". After 6 weeks, a LIGHT work out would be ok, but don't push yourself too hard....you had major surgery and everything inside you has been through major trauma. Please see your Dr. as soon as possible. It may be nothing, but better to be safe than sorry!

call your doctor NOW! And stop vigorously exercising. You may have pulled the stitches loose. Or worse. If you are dizzy go to the ER and get help now. C sections are a serioius surgery and your body needs time to heal. Keep us updated.

Congratulations on your new baby boy!! As a certified pre/post natal fitness instructor, I suggest that you STOP exercising at this time and seek the advice of your physician. You should not exercise if you experience heavy bleeding, pain, excessive urinary incontinence (leaking), or breast infection.

All my best,
D.

I would still check with your Dr, but personally.....after I had my first child ( he is now 7) I waited a few days and started running my treadmill,,,,,I thought I was gonna have to cancel my 6 week dr visit, I was still bleeding.....it was due to all the physical demands I was putting on my body according to my dr. After I had my second child (who is now 3) I waited about 3 weeks.....and did totally nothing until I stopped bleeding,,,and it was totally gone in about 2 weeks but I added a 3rd one in case before I did anything and I was totally fine!

I did not have a c section, but did start working out around 6 weeks after i had my daughter. I also started bleeding heavily. Prior to this, my bleeding had completely stopped around 3 weeks. I went to the doctor because I was concerned and she said it was my body telling me to slow down. I cut out the exercise and immediately stopped bleeding. I did start exercising about 4 weeks later and everyting was fine. I also had the dizzy spells which completely stopped when I started taking it easy.

I had 3 kids and with every one I had a lot of bleeding right around 4-5 weeks and didn't think it would stop by the time my 6 week ck was due, but it did. It was a lot of blood and I too thought that it was due to exercise, etc, but was told I had my period.

Trust me, I'm not judging you or trying to be mean when I say this, but I thought the recovery time for a C-section was 9 weeks? If you started working out 'pretty hard' then that definitely might have triggered the heavy bleeding and dizzy spells (possible anemia?). Of course, I totally understand that your doctor may have given you the green light to resume normal activities. You should probably call your doctor since you have both heavy bleeding and the dizziness.

Please remember that your body prepared and changed for 9 months in order to bring this baby into the world. You will have plenty of time to get your pre-body baby back, so take it slowly and don't overdo things! I know we all see celebrities who are back in tiptop shape after a month but don't forget that most of them have trainers to whip their body back into shape, chefs or assistants who prepare their dinners, baby nurses and nannies to watch their newborns while they go work out for hours and actually get decent blocks of sleep.

I can't believe your doctor didn't tell you to not work out hard for at LEAST 3 months! You could have ruptured your internal stitches! Call you doctor!!!! Seriously, if he/she didn't tell you to NOT work out, esp your abs, and something has gone wrong, that's malpractice. It could affect your abs for the rest of your life, not to mention your internal organs! I'm in shock! You need to take it easy! I know that we all want to get rid of the baby weight ASAP, but you've just has MAJOR abdominal surgery. You can start off with small exercises, light weights and walking and then work your way up to hard exercising. Please call your doctor. Since it's the weekend, I would be tempted to head to an urgent care facility or even a hospital. You could have done some real damage by working out too hard.

Honey, call your doctor & stop working out. Please.

I've had 2 c-sections & was told to take it very easy for at least 6 weeks & no major exercising until after 8 weeks. Even then you have to ease into things.

Just running the vacuum cleaner 5 weeks after I had my first C-section was enough to make me bleed again (I had nearly stopped) and send me back to bed for most of the day.

Don't push it. Hayden needs a healthy Mama & that means healing first.

God bless you!

Hi A.,
Congrats on the birth of your son!!!! My son weighed 10 lbs 7oz when he was born. I had something similar to you where I started bleeding again after my 6 week check up. I was sooo over doing things. I wanted to jump back in and work out just like I did before my pregnancy. I ended up setting myself back because I did too much too soon. It sounds like you should back off on you work outs. It takes a while to get back to being able to work out like you did before having a baby. You may want to check in with your OB just to make sure everything is OK. Good luck and enjoy being a Mommy!

Sounds like you are doing too much too soon....when is your follow up appt. w/OBGYN? I wouldn't mess around with the dizzy spells...could be elevated bp, enemia, etc...you need to get it checked out before you continue the strenuous workout routine.

I've had 2 c-sections and I think you are trying to do too much too soon. Your body isn't healed yet. If your bleeding has increased AND you are getting dizzy I would see your OB as soon as you can. Or at least call the office and let them know what you are experiencing. It's going to be about 4 months before those stitches are gone and the wound is completely closed. You have about 6 or 7 layers of stitches, so vigorous exercise can do some damage. Take it easy! But I know you probably want to get a little exercise too, so keep it light. And congratulations on the new baby!

Ouchie. I think you are right about the exercise. I think most OBs say to take it easy the first 6 wks til you have your 6wk check up. If you have aleady started and not gone for your check up I would back off on the exercise a bit til you see the doc. I bled ALOT after I had my c-section to have my daughter in July.
The dizzy spells could be from you loosing so much blood and might mean you could be anemic- low iron.
You might want to call the OB and ask about this as well. Hope that helps a little

It's most likely the working out that is getting you. You need to stop working out for now!! The docs say to do absolutely nothing for 6 weeks, and take it easy still for about 3 months. I understand the compulsion to get your body back, but it will happen. It took me about 7 months, but it happened. If you are going to work out right now, take it easy!! You could hemmorage! That's how my grandma died!

I am a labor and delivery nurse and yeah that sounds little much for you at this point in your recovery. If you are soaking more than a pad an hour or passing larger that quarter size clots, then you definitely need to go back to your Doc. You are probably bleeding heavier because you are more active. Slow it down a bit and see if that helps. Its common to bleed some but not bright red like that.

Sounds like you've received a lot of good advice. I've had 2 c-sections and you need to give your body time to heal. I totally agree with everyone else - call your doctor & let them know what's going on. Being strong & healthy for your new baby is more important than working out right now, that will come in time.

My best advice to you is to call your doctor ASAP. Tell them everything so they can make the best diagnosis. If it is a lot of blood that you are losing, they may even tell you you to go to the ER.
