I am currently 6 months pregnant with my second child. Yesterday, I took my son to a local lake to swim. We stayed all day, and even though I was applying SPF 50 sunscreen all day, I still got a severe sunburn. When I say severe, I mean..it hurts to walk...the muscles in my calves and ankles hurt so bad when I so much as get out of bed to go to the bathroom. My question here is...will this harm my baby? I sit here thinking about how hot I am, and wonder if she's in there going.."whew mom, it's hot in here!!" Does anyone know anything about this? I'm going to call my dr in the morning, but I"m very impatient and since several other people have expressed concerns about my unborn baby, it's making me more and more worried about it.
Well, I talked to my doctor today, who told me to monitor my body temp. and as long as there was no fever, that baby girl wasn't feeling what I'm feeling!! Thank goodness! Thanks for all the great advice! Especially the vinegar, I had never heard that, but AHHHHHHH feels soooo much better. I put it in a spray bottle...and no more sting! The soreness and swelling is still there, but at least the horrible burn isn't! Thanks guys!!!

sunburn is a inflammation of the skin. I have a great natural product that not only works great. But is safe to use while you are pregnant. The company has a 100% money back policy, so you have nothing to lose.

Your baby is very well protected in there! The pain you feel is all on the outside, she may be feeling your stress, but I don't think you have anything to worry about. You know you're supposed to stay out of hot tubs, tanning beds, saunas when pregnant because your temp can get too high easily, so you may take your temp just to be sure.
I have no idea whether it would hurt the baby or not. I say... check your temp and if it's ok then the baby should be fine. If your temp is really high then you may have a problem and want to call the nurse or there is the Lake after hours number you can call for free advice to see what they say.
That's my uneducated advice, lol.
A vinegar rub down will help relieve the heat. Yes you will smelllike vinegar but you will feel winderful to have the hot sensation gone. Next time try the sport spray no rub suncreen it is all we use in our house and so far we have been able to keep sunburns abay.
When things like this happen, don't hesitate. Call your doctor. He will either say it is nothing to worry about, or tell you what to do. Don't spend time in worry. You need to know. That is what you are paying him for.
Bless you, L..
I did the same thing with my last pregnancy. It was miserable!
My legs looked charred.
Your baby will be fine.
We just need to find some relief for you, Mama!
Pack on the pure Aloe Vera (from the plant if possible).
Layer on thick layers and let it soak in...repeat... repeat.
Vinegar helps too!
You can put white vinegar in a spray bottle and just drench yourself in it...over and over until the sting is gone.
Olive oil from the cupboard will help keep your skin moist...instead of lotions that can sting.
Oh dear.... please let us know what helps you find relief.
Many blessings,
A.
I don't think this will hurt your baby, but just know that anything higher than 45 spf does not work really.
I was told as a lifeguard to reapply sunblock every 45 min/45spf.
UVB rays are blocked by sunscreen but not UVA (A-as in aging/wriknles & B- burns). I know of really great line that blocks both; it's a 45 SPF and they have this awesome after sun gel that really works-- it turned my partial burn into a tan in 2 days!
I hope this helps you! But don't worry-- your baby has you plus everything else surrounding her that protects her!
Your baby is not in danger, but you have to be more careful in the sun, stay hydrated while you are burnt and keep your skin hydrated with aloe while you heal.
First I would definatly check with your dr to be sure all is ok- When I was pregnant with my daughter I got the worst sunburn of my life (and that was after feeling too hot and napping in the van under a shade tree thinking that would stop the burn- it didnt)Well that night I went into labor and the nurses said that the intense pain caused the contracts to start. Now I was further along then you are now so it may be different but like I said I would at least make sure. (kinda funny though- I was having more pain from the burn then the labor and they said if I got the epidermal it would help numb the burn) Good luck and God Bless!
I'm not sure if it will harm the baby, but you may need to check the expiration date on your sunscreen. I bought some SPF 50 Waterbabies this year at Wal-Mart. When I got home I noticed that it had expired in 2006!! Thank goodness I looked before I rubbed my 16 month old down with it and took him to the pool for the day.
I'm sure that by now, you have gotten some doctor's advice on this issue- but for future reference, you should know that Preperation H creme is a great reliever for sunburn!
That's what my doc had me use when I got severely burned before.
Hi L.,
It sounds like you may have sun-poisoning. I spent 4 1/2 hours in the sun one spring day many years ago. My ankles swelled up and looked like telephone poles, even the air hurt my skin! Naked, it looked like I was wearing a red bikini! My doctor told me there was nothing he could really do about it. I just had to 'Wait it out". I was in agony for over a week, then the water blisters started, and later I started to 'peel'. I didn't realize it at the time, but ANY burn is damaging the skin. Even a so-called 'tan' is damaged skin, just not as severe. You pay for it later in life. I'm 55 now, and wish I had never stayed in the sun that day when I was 18. I have avoided the sun as much as possible since then, and I had 3 kids. I would stay under cover when I took them to the beach.
If you are a blond or have blue eyes, (I have both), you are at greater risk of getting skin cancer, so avoid the sun!! Spray on a tan! It is a lot safer. Sorry if I scared you, dear, but you should be scared of sun damage, especially with the little ones!
In the meantime, spread on plenty of Noxema, whenever you need it. Keep your skin well moisturized. Good luck, dear.
When you are pregnant, if you eat much salt and are out in the hot sun all day, you can really swell and hurt like that. It may be that you are more swollen than you realize and it's not so much the sunburn but swelling that hurts. Sunburn shouldn't cause your muscles to hurt. I would suggest calling your doctor for a visit if you continue to hurt. One other thing, which is unlikely but possible, would be blood clots in your calves. This can sometimes happen to pregnant women and can be dangerous to you. If you notice more pain in your calf when you bend your ankle back toward you (not pointing your toes) along with swelling, soreness and heat, those MIGHT be symptoms of a blood clot. It nnever hurts to check it out. Better to be safe then sorry. I hope you feel better soon!
