I am looking for fun things to do for my father who is turning 65 this month. I plan on taking him to a very nice restaurant as we do every year but I was looking for something to do in addition to. Might I add that he is very picky and hard to please .

What can I do next?

Make him a scrapbook album of his life. You can do this, and journal your thoughts and feelings next to his photos. If you will go to www.dennydavis.net and then "f" for family or "f" for father, there are lots of wonderful ideas there. For example, I did one for my father: "A" is for the admiration I have for you. "U" for your uncomplaining ways....there is something for every letter of the alphabet. My dad loved it. I did it for his 79th bday. Good luck!

Since I don't know him it's hard to make suggestions. However, if he likes to fish maybe send him on a guided fishing tour with a friend or family member. If he likes to drink wine, take him to a wine bar where you can sample alot of different wines.

Ask him what he wants for his birthday. Or, you could find out his favorite hobby or thing to do and get/do it for him. Write loving letter to him letting him know how he positively impacted your life. Instead of going out why not cook him a great meal of his favorite foods.

If you can get a hold on pictures of him thru the years, that is always a big hit. You can do a hard cover book online thru snapfish or walgreens for about $20 and can have it done quickly. Or, if there is going to be a group, you can put them on DVD to watch as a movie.

Will others be there? If so, an idea that just went over really well at my FIL's 65th was to have guests write letters to him that are read at the party. My husband wrote a really touching letter about how much his dad meant to him and how he looks up to him ... was a tear-jerker for everyone there. Don't know that this classifies as fun, but it's meaningful.

Hi T.,

When my dad turned 65 and when my grandma turned 85 I gave them each a memory box. I had family members and dear friends of theirs write down their favorite memories of the honoree. Then, they were put in the box.

I placed a card on the top explaining how much the birthday guy/gal had touched everyone's lives and how important he/she was to all of us.

Both my dad and grandma loved their gifts. My grandma said that in 85 birthdays that was the best gift she had ever received. She was so excited for all the different people who had written their thoughts of her down. She read and re-read all those notes over and over.

One of the best ideas I have ever heard of came from another mama. It is Voicequilt. It is basically inexpensive but requires you to put a lot of time into arranging calls from friends and family to an 800 number. This is so meaningful because it gives people a chance to say those things one usually does not share until someone is gone. Just let them know what they mean in your life.

Hope this helps you as much as it helped me.
