Hi moms. I just realized that my mother-in-law is turning 60 in less than 2 weeks! What do I do?! My husband and I, along with my 2 brother-in-laws want to have a small (family only) surprise party for her. She means the world to us and I want to make sure she knows how much she is appreciated. We're all on very tight budgets so I need some ideas on how to keep the costs down. I was thinking for a gift that we could all (meaning her sons, myself, her grandchildren, and her great granddaughter) could make her a book called "60 Things We Love About You". I don't know what kind of food to serve though or where to have it. Please help! Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

What a GREAT idea... How wonderful!

Do you guys or BIL's have a decent size yard that you could do a cook out in? Each family could be responsible for a part of the meal, as in... you guys will buy the hamburgers and buns, BIL #1 will bring the sides, (beans, Coleslaw, pasta salad, potatoe salad, etc...), and BIL # 2 is responsible for drinks and disposable dishes (plates, napkins and silverware).

Hope you guys have fun and what a wonder DIL you are!!!

If you mean to go out, and want to keep costs down, try booking at an unconventional time slot. there's nothing wrong with a birthday brunch, or setting up a tea time party. Also, you can arrange with the restaurant/ eatery to have a limited menu, for a fixed price affair. 2 or 3 family style appetizers, a salad plate each, a choice of two entrees, coffee, soft drinks and dessert.

go to the acquarium together; go to a mini golf arcade;you could each make a quilt square, and sew it together into a zany quilt. it could be a chocolate, cookie and strawberry party, if that's what floats her boat. you could plant a tree; all catch a movie; go to an outdoor concert, with picnic baskets; if she's a rocking grandma, maybe all go out dancing.

have fun with the planning and with the party. whatever you do, I'm sure it will be special.

My sister and I happen to be throwing my mothers 60th bday party this Saturday. It will be simple yet fun. We rented the clubhouse of her subdivision, at very little cost, and our theme is "moms favorite things". We bought pink bowls to add her favorite snacks, almonds, chocolate, mints, fruit, Etc. We are ordering in her favorite pizza, and I am making Lemonade Cupcakes, and Chocolate Cupcakes. We're going to do Karaoke, which is also one of her favorite things. All in all, we'll have a party for 50 people for about $200.

Ways too keep costs down - clubhouses are everywhere. Someone you know who lives in a complex can get you one. Call the place yourself and explain that money is tight and you would like to rent it for half price. If they don't already have someone interested for that night, then why would they say no? Make your own cake/cupcakes. A personal book, such as the one you suggested is perfect. Making a photo book online can be fairly inexpensive ($25). Have your brothers assist with the food. If you ask something of each of them, you won't have to do so much.

You haven't told us a single thing about her except she's turning 60! So, nothing to give ideas from. Just Keep her in mind when you make your decisions. Think about what she would enjoy. Is she the backyard bbq type or the sit down, candle light dinner type? What are her hobbies? Does she play bridge? Would she want her friends from the senior center to be invited or just family? Would she like a mock casino night or would she want music and twinkling lights out back? What kind of food does she prefer? As long as you think about her preferances for each decision, you should be fine.
