6 Weeks Old and Teething... Is This Normal???

My son is just 6 weeks old. He is been fussing non-stop for the past few days and just as last night I notice he has little teeth seem to be coming out. Is it normal for a 6 weeks old baby and already teething??? My oldest son didn't start teething until he was 4 months old. Is it ok to put teething gel on a 6 weeks old baby since it says only for baby older than 4 months old? Need help to smooth him while he was hurting and especially help him sleep better during the night.

What can I do next?

It's not completely average, but it is definitely possible.

I recall reading in one of my baby or pregnancy books that some babies are born with teeth - a little creepy but possible.

You may want to call the pediatrician just to be safe in case it's something else.
But, the science is definitely there in rare cases - ~1/2000 according to BabyCenter.com (see link below).

It's not typical, but some kids get their teeth very early. And - oh joy! - that means you have to brush them, too. They have little soft brushes that fit on your finger, or you can just wipe them with a damp wash cloth. They have fluoride free baby tooth paste you can use. At least he'll be over teething pretty much by the time other babies start (my son had his first tooth at 6 months and had them all in by 2 years). Since they came in early, it might be that he starts losing his baby teeth on the early side, too (my son lost his first baby tooth at 6 yrs old), and then you can plan visits from the Tooth Fairy.

I agree with the growth spurt reasoning. My girls were very fussy during a growth spurt, but seemed to sleep O.K. My oldest daughter had a white spot were her bottom teeth are since she was a couple of months old, but the 1st tooth didn't come up until 11 months old. Also, 6 week old babies sometimes have problems with gas that could make them not sleep as well.

I don't think pediatricians are experts in teeth so I would call a pediatric dentist. If you don't have one yet it wouldn't hurt to make that contact. They can do a quick look and see.

Don't use the teething tablets, our ER doctor said they were very bad news and they can really hurt kids. Our Granddaughter we are raising used them and she stayed up for about 30 jours. She had a bad reaction to them. We used half the directed dose. He said if we brought her back and he found out we were still using them he would call the state in to investigate. They have belladonna in them and that's poison. It would very easy to make a simple mistake and have life changing consequences. I think a Pediatric dentist should know what to do it the little "teeth" coming in are truely going to break through and be his first teeth.

My daughtrer had her first teeth at 3 months.

Some babies are actually born with teeth--about 1 in 2000, so while the chances are slim, it is possible. Since it is rare, you should talk to your pediatrician.

Hi there. You can check with your pediatrician, but I doubt that he is teething.
Newborn fussiness actually peaks 6-8 weeks of age. Believe me - I know, my DD was colicky! It will pass.
Try swaddling, a dark room with some loud white noise, put him swing, or hold him in a sling so he feels a rocking motion. All of these things will calm him down.
Try the book - Happiest Baby on the Block. A lifesaver of a book!

Good luck!

While it wouldn't be completely unheard of, especially since a sibling had teeth at an earlier than average age, it is highly unlikely that he is actually teething. At six weeks old, a growth spurt is the first thing that comes to mind for fussiness.

Teething gels have largely fallen out of favor due to overuse that can lead to choking in babies. I absolutely would not use it on a 6 week old without the advice of your pediatrician.

Try rubbing his gums with a frozen, wet wash cloth.
