6 Week Old Likes to Hold Things

My 6 week old likes to hold things and he feels more secure while holding something when he sleeps (i.e. a finger, blanket, burp cloth, etc). Any ideas for something soft, easy to grasp, yet safe to put in the crib (no blankets or stuffed animals)?

What can I do next?

How about a piece of blanket binding stuffed with a little poly. My daughter loved her blanket. I asked her what part she liked most and she said it was the satin binding. Just an idea.

My son also had a giraffe angel dear, which was his favorite first toy. He would occasionally put it over his face, so I would check on him periodically to move it. He also loved his wubbanub. It's a greenie pacifier sewn to a tiny stuffed animal. The animal is just big enough to grab, but not big enough to hurt him.

we used silkies (travel size) with both our girls. these are like $25 and after losing two each girl we finally went to the fabric store, bought a few yards each of soft satin and another soft material and sewed them into a small double sided blanket. Saves money and easily replaceable, plus you get to pick the fabric. Good luck!

Have you considered a soft teething ring?

I like the "Taggies" products. Everything they make has a tag, actually lots of tags, to touch, caress & hold onto. They make blankets, toys & clothing.

Let me just recommend that whatever you choose have many of them. My oldest, now 9, loved the cloth diapers I used for burp clothes. She always had one, and today she has 4 very sad strips of blankie left that she sleeps with. She won't except new blankies and is very concerned about keeping the old ones. So keep in mind that whatever you decide to use it might be around for a long time. Also the book Owen by Kevin Henkes is a great story about a boy and his blankies.

If you are not wanting to give him something big to sleep with I have one idea. I was a paranoid 1st time Mommy with my daughter who also liked to hold things. Now she sleeps with a small blanket (kinda like a taggie) but when she was very little I let her fall asleep with a clean, dry baby washcloth. They were so tiny so it made me feel more comfortable and she couldn't have cared less what she was holding on to! :) Hope this helps!

I have the solution! My son at this age loved to hold on to something too. We got him a small taggie to see if it would work and it worked wonders. www.taggie.com

Go on the website and look at all the different sizes. He liked the smallest blankie they had which is about a 13X13 inches. Not very big at all. My son would hold the blanket and look at the different tags on the edges. He then would rub the tags until he would go to sleep. At a young age as yours, I would have to hold the blanket up for him to hold properly (to see the tags).

He is now 2 and has gotten attached to a plain white cloth diaper and the little taggie stays in his bed as well.

Very soft small blankies. My girls each have one, the ones they have have a little baby animal head in one corner and knots on the other corners, I've run into 3 or 4 other kids or moms with the same kind. They've been washed so much I couldn't tell what the tag said, I think it was called "Angel Dear" or something like that. I found it in a children's boutique for $12. You may also find some very small stuffed animal with good parts for holding like a bunny with arms legs and ears, or look in the rattle section, there's always some small soft quiet toys there too.

the burp rags that i had when my duaghter was born look like cloth diapers. there made out of t-shirt material with pretty flowers and pink strpes oh them. i cant find any now. but she sleeps with one and she does suck her thumb. she likes the tag so i sewed ribbon around the edge for the tag effect. there small and soft. i really didnt like the idea about the thumb but she only does it when she sleeps. but she loves her taggie.
