so i went out of my way to make sure i was taking a good high quality prenatal supplement and i got the brand "rainbow lite" from whole foods. super good stuff. and im taking a daily probiotic and nordic naturals fish oil and a vitamin d supplement because i am highly defficient in it. and yes, all of these have been approved by my midwife.

so as im reading the label i see i am supposed to be taking 6 of the prenatals a day...6! there is 60 in a $14.99 bottle. so im literally going to be going through an entire bottle every ten days and spending $45 a month on prenatals and $30 for the fish oils and so on...crazy right?? have any of you heard of prenatals where you had to take 6 a day?? when i was pregnant the first time with my son i didnt know as much as i know now, so my prenatals werent as good of quality, but i only had to take one a day.

or do any of you know any prenatals that a GOOD quality that i dont have to take 6 of a day?? haha thanks moms!

What can I do next?

My midwife just had me start New Chapter Organics' "Perfect Prenatal." It's also a whole foods product. I've been very impressed. In the past, every prenatal I've tried has made me miserably sick! I'm not having any problem with these, though. They are still expensive ($32 for a bottle of 96--but I found them for a little less on Amazon) and you're supposed to take 3 a day (I've only been taking 2). Still, that's a little better than $45 per month and six a day! My midwife also mentioned the Rainbow Lite brand, but she had me go with these since they are so gentle on the stomach and she said they're also excellent.

I took a regular one a day prenatal vitamin that I got from the regular grocery store. Nothing fancy. Perfect baby, healthy pregnancy. I totally agree with the person who said that it's your diet that matters most, not your vitamin.

I ate an extremely healthy diet after my morning sickness subsided. Tons of fruits and veggies, high quality protein, etc. That's the part that really matters.

that is ridiculous. talk to your midwife and she if she can recommend one. my obgyn told me any of them were fine.

from a mom of a great healthy 8lb cesarian section (breech) baby boy. and yes, i am too LAZY to ensure every milligram of sustenance i put in my body is 100% O. healthy perfectly perfect in every way. rme.

just keep in mind that everyone is different and while there are people who are completely anal and picky about every little thing - there are lots of us who are more conscientious rather than straitjacketed- and we are quite healthy and happy too, tyvm. (not directed at you, just anyone who would judge others for their lifestyles which don't quite "measure up" to their own perfect ones. that doesn't seem like you at all.)

Sounds like you are perfect with the supplements, but most women don't need the 6 each day. I usually see 1-3 of the Rainbow Light prenatals, which are, the best on the market, IMHO. Most of the MD/OB-prescribed ones are FULL of synthetic, non-bioavailable supplements, that IMHO the moms are better off not taking anything than that junk. Remember that these are SUPPLEMENTS to SUPPLEMENT your diet, rather than take the place of nutrition. If you are eating O., barely steaming veggies (so that they are still crunchy), keeping refined carbs out of the diet, plenty of water, etc, then 1 is probably more than enough, but most people are too lazy to each properly.

Nordic is a fabulous company - only fish oil I will use. PB8 is my favorite probiotic.

Also, think about Floradix board the end to keep your iron up. The amount go oxygen in your blood is dependent on the amount of iron in it. This is a liquid and highly bio-available.

DetoxiGreen from Dr. Natura is also an awesome source of nutrition that gently keeps the liver happy, thus allowing for proper glucose and hormone regulation. 1 each day of those usually suffice and then you can drop down your prenatal by 1, for certain.

Enjoy the pregnancy! Sounds like your midwife knows what she is talking about!

My prenatals were in a pack of 9 a day! They weren't all the same though. Metagenics was the brand - There was a multivitamin (2) and a DHA (1) and I think a calcium or two .... I think it costs almost $1.50 a day for those. Wish I could help you more with that!

@Adansmama - Ha. I don't do all O. either. Actually I probably do 1% O. stuff. When pregnant with my son I bought the store-brand "one vitamin a day". It was my MIL who got me the "best" prenatals (mentioned above). She wants to buy me O. fancy-pants stuff? Sure. Sounds good. But I'm not buying all that for myself.

Well, it could be a marketing gimmick to get you to use up a lot of their stuff. Or, it could be a recognition on their part that pills are only absorbed 15-30% anyway, so you're not getting much out of each pill. (That's from the Physician's Desk Reference, by the way. If your abdomen were x-rayed, you'd see those pills working their way through your colon.)

There is an excellent powdered supplement that you mix in liquid (water or whatever you choose) that is highly absorbable, upwards of 90-95%. It's got everything you need rather than just a few nutrients, and will strengthen your immune system. It's safe for pregnant women - in fact, it's from a company whose lead scientist was one of the first to develop infant formulas, so he brought the standards of pediatric liquid nutrition into the industry. I work with many people who've used it as a prenatal, and their physicians/midwives have said that the umbilical cord is so thick from all the nutrition reaching the baby.

It would certainly not be more expensive than what you are doing now - less, and more effective.

You can buy it online but you get to work with a consultant who will help you, and there's unbelievable support. I can help you and also connect you with a colleague in Oregon if that makes a difference to you.

Let me know. But if you want to do this on your own, you want powder (not pre-mixed liquid - many ingredients break down over time), multiple ingredients (because they all work in partnership so 70+ is the standard), manufactured in US under near pharmaceutical grade conditions (not just distributed by a US company), a company with multiple patents on formulas (not just ingredients, and proving safety, efficacy and uniqueness), something safe for preemies through senior citizens, something with no warning labels, and based on clinical data/research.

It's been a while, but it remember experiencing the same thing. Many of the prenatals said that you had to take multiple pills a day. I can't remember the brand I used but I got it at my Coop and you could probably find it at any Whole Foods Store. I want to say that it was Rainbow Light Prenatal One or Once a Day or something like that. It was specific about only needing to be taken one time per day. I also tended to get anemic during pregnancy so I took liquid Floradix . It's tastes terrible, but doesn't cause consitpation like the pills and you can disguise the taste in a bit of juice.
Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy!
