My little girl Cecelia has been constipated for 6 days. Her and her twin sister have had this issue since they started meds for reflux several months ago. I have talked with their Doc's regarding this several times (Pediatrician and GI specialist.. also multiply nurses) and have recieved alot of advice such as increased tummy time, juices (apple, prune, and pear), tummy massage, leg pumping, sitz bath, rectal temp, glicerine supository, even filling their nose/throat suctioner with warm water and using it to give an enema (which I tried sunday evening and again last night). The bottom line is it has almost been a week for this poor girl and nothing has worked as it normally does. She is miserable and has spent up to two hours at a time crying and trying to push it out. I talked with her Pediatrician last week regarding this (with no avail) and I know I need a Doc appt (with her GI spacialist) to get this issue resolved. I have spent the last two days on the phone talking to multiply nurses trying to get advice and trying to make an appt. I am wondering if anyone out there can possibly suggest something else so I can try to get her some relief before we get to the Doc. They don't seem to understand the urgency. I am wondering if anyone can help us this evening!!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

i am really paranoid about giving them new things in thier diets. although they are 6 months old they were almost 2 months premature and just starting cereals (along with the juices they've had). i am open to trying foods but might ask you more questions about it before i feel comfortable.

Try a tsp of karo syrup in 2oz of water in a bottle.. that has always worked for me and my 2 kids.. or try different fruit in a bottle mixed with cereal.. like plum, prune.. etc to give the cereal a good taste but the fruit to help things move along.. good luck!

My Olivia has been constipated since birth! I've tried everything! I used to use a product called Barley Green. it is a green powder that i would put in her juice in the am. The only problem w/ that is now that she is 4, I'd need to put a lot more in and all day to do the work it needs to do, and she can taste it. I have some that you can try if you want/need. let me know and I can meet you someplace. A word of advice about the juices, the 'p' words are best. apple tends to give some kids gas and no poops. makes it worse. You can try real prune juice. vaseline on your pinky and massage her rectum too. I feel for you and her! I used to have to put her in her crib, and help her little feet and let her push on my hands until a few little 'pebbles' woudl come out, and then go back in a half hour to let her try again! I know it breaks your hart, and it is so scary too! Good luck!

When my son was a baby, he had similar issues. We did the glicerine supositories and that usually worked. We also did a teaspoon of Light Karo syrup in a bottle of water. Over the summer, the problem popped back up. My doctor recommended Culturelle for Kids. You can get it over the counter at CVS. It comes in a capsule and can be mixed with baby food, bottles, etc. It is completely healthy (she said it just promotes regular bowel movements) and can be used daily. So far it has helped to keep things moving in the right direction. Hope this helps.

Prune juice works for my daughter, she was a little older when I started it but she was older when she first started getting constipated. It should work within a half hour. I mixed it with an equal amount of water. I think it's good to get it resolved since you don't want her to be scared to poop which could make her hold it in and create a cycle.

You could try using Culturelle (a probiotic) it is in capsule form and it can be put in anything that she drinks. Doing this daily should help. You can get it at Sams Club or order online at Vitacost.com (Check with your physician though, just to make sure that you can give safely to a 6 month old)

If they are not breastfed and drinking formula - Nestle Goodstart was the best for my son. He has always had constipation issues too.

I don't know if this is something you would be interested in trying but they have all- natural laxative drops for babies at any drug store. I Used them on my son when he was backed up for almost a month and his doctor wouldn't listen and wouldn't listen (i've switched docs recently ) and they worked wonderfully along with fedding him prunes and/or Prune juice.

Good luck
