6 Month Old Barely Sleeping During Day?

Despite having a 2.5 year old already I can't remember when infants should develop a daytime nap schedule. I swear I have read Healthy Sleep Habits over and over and no matter what I do we can't seem to establish a pattern.
He is a great night sleeper, for which I am very thankful, goes down no later than 7pm and typically wakes around 7am. But daytime naps are completely erratic. I am nursing and try to put him down around 9-10am, sometimes it works, most days it does not. If he does go down it's a gamble if he will take a 20 min nap or up to two hours. Two hours is a rarity. Then afternoon I will try again around 2pm, same drill. Often I will then nurse him to get him to fall asleep and sometimes we are successful in getting a nap and others not.
Any suggestions? thanks in advance

What can I do next?

I read Healthy Sleep Habits as well, and felt like the world's biggest failure when I could not seem to implement this at home. Our daughter slept anywhere from 10-12 hours at night, but was a terrible napper. The swing was my savior during the day. I know alot of people would say it's not a good habit to get into, but I eventually felt her sleep was more important than anything and if that's what worked, I rolled with it. When she got too big for it, she slept in her crib with alot less fuss than I thought we would have and at almost 3 years old, she sleeps 10 hours per night, and takes a 2 hour nap most days (sometimes 3 hour naps). Good luck!

Since he is not on a set napping schedule despite your best efforts I would say it's likely that he is not ready for any rigid nap schedules yet. Go with the flow more (as much as possible with a 2.5 yr old around!) and try to put him down when he seems tired, not necessarily always striving for it to be the SAME time everyday. Your son is still quite young for only 2 naps/day especially considering he was born 2 months early. I seem to remember at least 3 naps/day at that adjusted age. The less you worry about following that book and the more you listen to your instincts...the better off you and your son will be. All the best.

The morning nap usually develops around 3 to 4 months old. I don't know anything about preemies, but your son would be only 4 months old if he had been full-term, right? Maybe that's why you don't see the naps emerging on a more regular basis. I would ask your Pediatrician if you should expect him to react as a 4 month old or 6 month old for sleep training issues.

And his night sleeping sounds wonderful! I would not expect 2 hour naps at this age per nap, since he is probably taking 3 naps a day. (My kids didn't start taking 2 hour naps until they were taking only 1 nap a day.) But you should be striving for at least 45 min of sleep. I would keep doing what you are doing. Consistency is the key!

I was just about to post the same question! I am at my wit's end. My daughter will only take catnaps, goes to sleep by about 7:30 pm and is now waking between 4 and 5 am and staying up until around 7:30 am. More than a nap schedule, I'm just worried that she's not getting enough sleep. If you figure something out let me know! Otherwise, I'm going to keep checking your post to see if other moms have other advice :)
