6-Y-o Seeing Spots That Obscure Vision

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has experience with spots that partially obscure vision. My 6-y-o started complaining of this on and off in the last couple days, and I can't gauge how serious it might be. As far as I can tell, the blobs might last about 5 minutes and might be related to changes in light conditions (i.e., watching TV in the dark then moving to light). Any advice? Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you, everyone. My daughter is so dramatic about every little thing and my schedule is so relentless that part of me wanted to drag my feet on seeing the drs. I really did need a dozen people to tell me what I knew: you don't mess around with eyes -- get to the doctor!

I work for an ophthalmologist and when people describe those symptoms, we bring them in right away. It could just be floaters like the other people have written, but it could also be signs of a retinal detachment. It doesn't happen that often in children, but better to be safe than sorry. I would reccommend a pediatric ophthalmologist not optomistrist because they have to go through medical training and have a greater understanding of eye problems. Good luck!

When the light is flat, I see little squiggles and things, and I finally talked to my optomotrist about it because it would make it really hard to ski near the day's end. (everything would be white due to the snow, and then the quiggles and stuff would drift thru my vision) . . . it is apparently some of the "goo" inside your eye. But, that said, I wouldn't just take it for granted. The "blobs" could be spots from looking at something bright and then going to something not so bright (like when you stare at the sun), or it could be something more serious.

My advice would be not to watch TV in the dark, because it's not good for your eyes at all . . . and if that doesn't solve the problem, I'd take her to an optomotrist. An optomotrist can look into the retina and check it out, make sure it looks normal.

I see spots all the time, I wouldn't describe them as blobs though. May just be a 6 year old's best description I don't know. I recently told my eye Dr and said my eye site is fine. I will see someone new when I need a new prescription. I would take her to an eye Dr and see what they say.

I wouldn't neglect seeing a doctor about a problem with vision.

While there are many insignificant causes of vision distortion, there could also be something like development of a detached retina which could progress relatively quickly to blindness if nothing is done.

It is worth the price of a visit to an ophthalmolgist to make sure nothing is wrong.

I get them i have all my life. I call them flaoters cause they tend to float acros my sight. When I get them really bad I end up getting a migraine. Has her head been hurting? Did she hit it? take her to an eye doctor to get checked out.

It sounds like a change in light thing...but it is better to be safe than sorry. There is an excellent pediatric ophthalmologist out near Donaldson's Crossroads. I can't remember his name of the top of my head, but he was great with my children. Good Luck!!!
