It all depends on you and your belief system.

What I think happened..He saw a spirit. I believe that some children are sensitive enough to feel and sometimes even see those who have passed but not moved on, I believe some even return to act as guardian spirits. Guardians are usually relatives. I also believe that children radiate a type of light that can attract spirit energies.

That said, there are "good", "bad" and "echo" spirits.

Talk to your son, let him know that you couldn't see the woman, but that you believe that he saw her. Ask him how she made him feel. If he felt calm and safe seeing her then I wouldn't worry. Chances are she's likely attached to the house and just an "echo". If he sees her again at other locations and he still feels calm and safe, she's likely to be a "good" spirit and attracted to your child. No harm should be caused by her.

Now for that not so good news. If your son tells you he feels unsafe and scared of the woman then you need to guide him into standing up to this energy and telling it to go away if he sees her again. Especially if he sees her in other locations besides the house.

Love him and comfort him, give him confidence in this. Chances are he'll grow out of it, most do, if not, he'll need you to help him deal with the things he sees that no one else can.

Good luck.

Our middle son saw "angels" for a long time. He'd seem them on the stairs.

No one else saw them.

Today, he's a perfectly happy, healthy 19 year-old who just finished his first year of college with honors.

No need to worry, mama. Your boy is just 5. Not out of the ordinary at all.

Did he watch a movie or show with anything scary in it? Even the most kid-friendly movies like Cinderella have some scary moments for a 5 year old. Perhaps he is remembering that?

I also agree with the other posters that it is possible it is a spirit. When I was about 8, we visited a distant family member's house in another state and they had a rocking chair in the entryway next to a dresser. I stared at the rocking chair because there was an old lady sitting in it and no one else seemed to see her. The homeowners saw me looking at the chair and thought i wanted to sit in it so they kept trying to make me sit in it and the mom finally came and walked me over to the chair and put me in it. I didn't want to be rude but also didn't want to sit on her lap. The old lady pushed me off and said "get off my lap". My family SWEARS there was no old lady at all and I just got on the empty chair and fell off the chair but I know to this day that old lady was in that chair! Not sure if it was a sprit or not but it scared the hell out of me and my family still laughs at me to this day claiming it was all in my mind!

Hopefully your son just forgets about it and moves on. Don't make a big deal about it but if he brings it up again I would acknowledge it and follow Dana's notes. Good luck!

What's wrong with saying "Oh, that's nice, dear"? He was probably crying because you didn't believe him.

You should have simply said, "Really? That's so interesting. What do you think about that?"

He could have seen what he says he saw. It doesn't sound like anything creepy or scary at all. I grew up in a house that was on property that used to belong to a colonial-period funeral home so things like this? Normal. Harmless.

You know, I'm not one that's really big on ghosts hauntings and stuff like that. BUT recently a friend posted some pictures on FB where her kid was in a play and her husband got a picture of a ghost watching the kids in the play. It's very plain to see. He was about to take a picture of the kids and something caught his sight out of the corner of his eye. So he moved the camera over and saw her. A figure in a long white dress sitting in a box seat watching. It's as plain as anything. He shared it with his friends on FB right then. Since people were watching for her there were other people who saw her during the kids performances too.

Spooky!!!!

I don't feel like they are here to scare us or anything but perhaps to help us to recognize there is something after this body dies away. We do exist afterwards in some form or another.

Well maybe he is seeing exactly what he told you he was seeing. My cousins son used to see "a really pretty lady in a really white dress with wings" perched up in the corner of his bedroom. Don't freak out all over him or you will not be getting much sleep anymore!!

I've heard many stories of kids seeing spirits. One friend, who also saw them into adulthood as did her mother and aunts, told me that it's usually when the kids have an open enough mind to see it. My own son saw my mother in the restaurant where we were having lunch moments before her death. He was 2 1/2 at the time.
