I would take him to the Dr. to rule out anything serious. Especially since he is acting like he is in extreme pain.
My 5 year old son was going outside so we could leave for church, He started running to the car and stop and screamed crying. He said his head was hurting in the back of his head and could not lean forward nor backwards because it hurt him worse. He kept saying he was scared. He has a history of his head hurting while washing it and he is always scared to wash his hair..but never frequent complaining of headaches. Does anyone have any advice ?
Thank you guys so much. We took him to the ER and they said it was a pulled muscle..they would not do any test on him and that upset me...I am going to keep a close eye on it and keep you updated. Thank you for the idea to keep up with them, because I am certainly going to from now on. But praise Jesus he is okay=) As far as we know and pray he is....

I sometimes turn too quickly in the shower and hit a nerve or something and sometimes I can't move for a moment. It is quite scary. The feeling I get is sharp, yet tingly and annoying. I haven't done it in a while, but it does happen. But I am old =[ Sorry your little guy is going through this.
I know there is a muscle in the back of your neck that runs up the back of your head about even with your ears. There are two, one on each side. That is usually where I feel the pain, but it doesn't feel like muscle pain.
I would say get to a Dr. ASAP. Hurting in the back of the neck is one thing spinal meningitis does. We had a grandson under a year to have that.
Hope he is OK.

One thing you might not have thought about is aspartame - found in diet cokes, some gummy vitamins, yogurts, etc. Aspartame causes headaches in a lot of people. My best friend's 5 year old was getting headaches a lot, and she thought they were miagraines. I asked her about aspartame. She looked at everything in the house and found out it was in the gummy vitamins she was giving him every day! She stopped giving him those and his headaches stopped. Just a suggestion you may not have thought about!
I would take him to the Dr once they open. I'm sorry to hear this, it could be nothing, or there could be something more, it's best to take him in to be evaluated. Be sure you write down when he gets the headaches, is it at a certain time of day, when he is running around, after he eats or reads...? It could help you and the Dr see if there is a common link that triggers it.
I'm a physical therapist, and it really does sound muscular to me. If you can, you might try to get a referral to a pediatric PT, who can help stretch out and strengthen his neck muscles through play. If your neck muscles are tight, it can cause headaches, especially when running around.
I'm not in the medical profession but I'm not comfortable with the ER diagnosis. Definitely monitor the situation but give it a week for him to recover from this "muscle strain." If one more headache occurs, go to a pediatrician or go to a neurologist if you don't need a referral. An MRI may need to be done as part of an evaluation.
