Hi All!

I have a 5 year old daughter who got a fever on Thursday, her Birthday (aug 5th) and we broke the fever by taking meds, etc. on that day. She got the fever again on Friday and it was 100.4 again. It broke and things were better. She really hasn't been eating much, she's been drinking a lot though. She has been moody, cranky, gets frusterated easily, etc.

She seems to go in phases for the last weekend... she was fine but then gets spouts of frusteration or anger. She will play for a while and have fun, then cuddle up on the couch and act lethargic and whiny. She is very clingy to me, and only me.

I feel like I should take her to the doctor's and describe what's going on with her. I feel like since the fever she's been a really different kid. She's not running a temp today... but she is at my mom's house and doesn't want to get off the couch and is cranky/whiny.

Has anyone experienced this? Do you think I should take her to the doctor? I'm sitting on the fence with taking her to the doctor or just seeing if it will pass. She's just not herself and I feel almost like I should get her checked out.

Help... please!!! :) I'm really at a loss...

What can I do next?

I agree with Dana about going to the pediatrician with her. This is a really good forum for support on things but as far as medical advice, there are so many variables that could be there. I hope it all works out and she is ok and everytime I have taken my kids to the Dr, I have not been sorry that I did.

Why don't you call the doc, explain how she's been, and see if they want to see her.

My two cents? Physically, she's probably fine. Is she starting kindergarten? I bet that the feeling lousy triggered some emotional stuff about all the big changes coming up and that's why her personality has been so wonky. Of course, I could totally be missing the mark here, but that's what I'd think if this were my 5 year old.

Good luck.

My daughter acted like that last winter, just really whiny, cranky, even putting on her coat seemed to really bother her, it was like she was a whole different child. 6 weeks later, she had a fever and a stiff, swollen neck. I took her right away to her doctor and they did a blood test...she had mono. There is no meds for it (she also had the flu that same day and they gave her a shot to stop the vomiting), but after a few days of rest and several weeks of making sure she wasn't running all over the place, she got better and has been fine ever since. I would take her and ask for a blood test.

Could be a host of things. Mono, strep, her 6 year molars coming in, or just a mild virus. I would call the doc if you feel like something is up. Trust your gut. My husband thought I was being rediculous once for taking my daughter to the doc simply because she was acting out of sorts. She didn't even have a fever, but it turned out that she had a double ear infection, and was teething her molars. I'm glad I took her in! Just call them and tell them that you want her seen just in case.

My daughter was doing the same (she just turned 7) and took her to the Dr's and she had strep throat. Never complained once of a sore throat.

Well it could be an act to get more attention if somethings changing in the house. She could be breaking her 6 year molars thats why she had the temp. She also could be sick so its a catch 22. I would bit the bullet n take her in to make sure she doean't have an ear infection or strepp or something in that nature. it could also be viral but with out a dr. who knows.

It could be hand, foot and mouth disease coming. Blisters come about 5-10 days after exposure--fever being the only symptom in the interim.

I would take her to the doctor. A fever does indicate something is going on. Remember, the doctor can make recommendations, but as her mother it is your choice to do what you feel is right for her.

Children don't just get a fever for no reason, they indicate infection, so if she still has it definitely take her in to the doctor. Could be one of many things and she may not know what is really wrong just that she feels yucky. You can always call and talk to a nurse at the office and get their opinion, they don't tell people to come in to be seen unless they think there is something going on. Hope she feels better soon!

Absolutely call the pediatrician's office and find out if they want to see her. Hardly any of us on here offering our opinions are medical in nature.

Having gone through a serious health situation myself right after the birth of my daughter 2 years ago (cancer) that everyone blew off as postpartum hormones, I'm a BIG advocate for calling and letting the doctor guide you towards a path of peace of mind.

You never know what viruses are going around locally. Both of our kids just had hand-foot and mouth and had most of the symptoms you describe. But, we did call our pediatrician just to make sure they didn't need to be brought in for evaluation.

Good luck.
