Recently my friend has been telling me that he five year old has been urinating in his pants and in his bed a couple of times a night. She is a single mother of three-her son 5, another son 19 months, and a 4 month old daughter. She is a stay at home mom and her kids are in early kinderg. programs. She attends all of the programs. What advice can I give to her when she is already at her wits end??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My friend took her son to the hospital and it turned out to be stage 1 diabetes. Dont assume its for attention for all you moms out there. It could end up being a serious medical problem that could last them forever.

Thanks,
R.

I would say off-hand that something is going on in the boy's life. How long has she been divorced? That may be the issue. Sometimes a child can not express himself so he just finds some other way to show it. She can give him lots of love and attention. Maybe he feels like he needs some one on one time with mom.

She needs to stop letting him drink liquids too close to bed time and making sure he is using the toilet before getting into bed. Also she is going to have to remind him throughout the day to go to the bathroom and may have to walk him to the bathroom to make sure he does it. If this doesn't work she needs to talk to her doctor. Some kids bladders do not grow as fast as the rest of their body. My son at 11 still has accidents. It seems to be a problem in boys more often. She needs to not loose her cool with him. That will make things worse. I hope she has help with all those kids.

I was a better wetter well into grade school. Its a really difficult thing, so I feel for her and her son. There are products out there that help break the cycle of wetting the bed. Its a pad that is sensitive to getting wet and will actually sound an alarm when the person starts wetting the bed. In the end, the alarming helps the child wake up before it happens. Its a tough for a couple of weeks, getting woken up in the middle of the night - but so worth it. I don't know the name of the product, but i'm sure you can find it online!

Good luck to her,
A.

The youngest is only 4 months old...did he want another boy? How is he adjusting to the new child in their life.
Is this new, it sounds like it is since you say recently but maybe he is not night time potty trained? My son is 7 and still wears a pull up at night. He has high stress, sound sleeper and really doesn't wake when he pees.
His peeing gets worse when he is upset/worried about something. He isn't a big talker about feelings and sometimes we just have to sit in silence for a long time and give him the opportunity to talk. I'm talking a 45 min. car ride in silence before he will begin to tell me whats up sometimes. They are scared and nervous but they have to know that no matter how big or small you are there no matter how long it takes.
It could be infection. Boys aren't as likely to get UTI's but it does happen. This could always be the issue, and have nothing to do with his mental thoughts.
Best of luck to her!

It may be the addition of a new baby in the house is causing him some upset and stress. He could also have developed some underlying constipation that is putting pressure on his bladder that he cant control.
