Hello........
My daughter was diagnosed with Vesicoureteral Reflux at 4 months. She had ureter reimplantation surgery at 18 months and never had a UTI since. A few months ago, she had a urodynamics study done because she is has issues emptying her bladder all the way. The urologist diagnosed her with a neurogenic/overactive bladder. Ever since that test, she has gotten 3 major infections. I am really worried as to the cause. One of the infections was so bad she was hospitalized. They gave her rocephin, then Cipro. This time, she just got her 3rd shot of rocephin until the sensitivities come back tomorrow and they can prescribe an oral antibiotic. I am very worried she is building up resistance to antibiotics, especially getting these rocephin shots that cover such a broad spectrum of bacteria. I haven't been able to meet with the urologist yet, so I am throwing this question out there. Does anyone else have any kids with recurring kidney infections? Maybe caused by bladder problems? She has trouble emptying her bladder all the way. Any suggestions? Or just hearing others with similar experiences helps. I am trying to figure out a way to stop these infections from occurring. Thank you:)

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of your comments and suggestions. We know why she gets these infections, her bladder does not work properly, I was just concerned about the antibiotics. I have talked to numerous dr's and feel a bit better. Hopefully we'll figure out a plan in the next few weeks with her urologist on what to do next to stop these infections. Take care and good luck to all of you!

My son is 2 years old and has a very severe grade 5 kidney reflux on his right kidney. He has been lucky without too many infections. He is on a daily dose of Bactrum...3ml. They have done VCUG's and it is not correcting. He is going to have surgery on Tuesday the 11th of this month, in 3 days. They are doing a ureterostomy and we will have that until next year at this time when they will do the total repair on that kidney. I am very nervous for this surgery because I dont really know what to expect with taking care of him and what all will happen. i know this is not the same situation, but i have been getting more and more nervous and I am trying to find anyway of talking about it. Thanks for telling your story and listening to mine.

Start giving her cranberry juice daily. If she will take a pill, get cranberry suppliments. I have had uti's for my entire adult life and I have been taking cranberry for years. If I stop, I get a uti. As long as I am on it, I don't. I also give them to my daughter who is developmentally disabled and incontinent and a very high risk of uti's. She has not had one since I have been giving them to her. Cranberry keeps the bacteria from sticking to the Urinary Tract walls and flushes it out thereby preventing uti's. My father who had prostate cancer (all gone now) takes it also to prevent the uti's that he started getting after his cancer treatment. The stuff is THE BOMB!!

I have a daughter that had so many ear infections that we gave antibiotics almost continuously. She developed an intolerance for them, and was on the strongest possible. When she was 4 she got diagnosed with Lymes disease. It was discovered because she had joint pain all the time and didn't want to ride her bike down the block. Because the antibiotics weren't effective for her, I sought out alternative therapies. I took her to a acupuncturist that specialized in Lymes disease, and after 3 months he was able to move the disease out of her body. We moved, and I found a homeopath that helped my daughter further in raising her immune system so that she didn't get ear infections anymore. I guess the advice that I want to give you is for you to also check out some alternatives for your daughter. You can help her strengthen her body so that she doesn't get the UTI's in the first place. A good resource to finding a good homeopath is www.homeopathicdirectory.com. Another website to understand what in the heck homeopathy does is the national center for homeopathy at www.nationalcenterforhomeopathy.org.

I think the hardest thing for me was to see my daughter so sick, and feeling like a wasn't able to help her. You're doing a great job, just asking for others opinions. Good luck :)

Hi K.,

First I want to say, I'm so sorry your young daughter is going through this terrible infection / illness.

When reading your story, I thought of my daughter and wanted to share with you what happened to her and maybe this information may or may not be of use to you and your doctor to help your daughter.

My daughter at the age of 17 had developed 2 kidney stones trapped on one of kidneys which were so huge and painful she was hospitalized and had a stent inserted to move the stone off of her kidney.

To make a long story short, numerous tests were done and it turned out that my daughter had an over active Para thyroid which produced too much calcium in her system and in turn they created the kidney stones, and infectioln. She had two surgeries, one to blast the kidney stones away because they were too big to pass and then when she got stronger, she had her Para thyroid removed by a head and neck surgeon. My daughter has a scar at the base of her neck but over time it had almost vanished.

The issue of the strong antibiotics is also an alarming issue; my daughter was on Cipro and other strong antibiotics for months while dealing with the kidney stones, she ended up getting yeast infections. I called her doctor and told him she was going to stop taking them for awhile.

I know that taking strong antibiotics for long periods of time can lead to other bad health issues. And your daughter is so young.

Maybe your daughter needs to see another specialist, because there maybe another underlying issue that is creating these infections.

I wish the best for your daughter.

Hi my daughter had her first kidney infection at 3 weeks, was diagnosed with vesicoureteral reflux at 6 weeks. She was put on a preventitive dose of antibiotics for the next years. She had one breakthrough infection at 18 mos and they performed a uretal reimplantation at 23 mos. The surgery was followed by a hospital bacterial infection that took 2 1/2 mos of double antibiotics with lots of hosptial time to cure. She's been OK since then, but she has an atonic bladder and severe encropresis (constipation with soiling). I'm sharing all that so you know my child has had similar issues

Have you tried having her pee every two hours? My brother is a urologist and suggested this may help with the altonic bladder. In your case, maybe it will help keep her bladder less full until the urologist sees her. Good luck

When our daughter had to have several rounds of antibiotics it was really that the infection did not clear up in the first place. It was there brewing in the background. You may need to keep her on several rounds in a row, without let up. She ended up being on one for a month, 30 days. That seems to knock it out.

You are right to be concerned about the injection. That is used for very serious infections. If used too often, it won't work for her.

Continue to advocate...

Hi K.,

It sounds to me that your daughter is out of balance. Medicine is just masking the problem. Wellness starts in your home, good nutrition, good water is the key along with rest and good air. I also recommend balancing her good bacteria with probiotics after antibiotics.

If you are interested in having wellness in your home let me know and I can show you how.

Have a great day.

My daughter was also diagnosed with VC at 4 months we did a procedure called Deflux which was outpatient when she turned 1 and it seems to have done the trick. We kept her on septra for about 2 years and luckily no reinfection. I did a lot of research on WebMD myself and talked to her regular doctor as well since the specialists are not always as available. If she's having kidney issues I'm thinking the problem wasn't completely corrected. She must still be having reflux issues back up there. They will probably have to do another VCUG to diagnose the issue. If she still has a hard time holding her bladder, her ureter muscles may not be strong enough if that is the case, I would ask about Deflux and if your daughter is a candidate.

Good luck,
S.
