5 Week Old Bowel Movements

For the past 24 hours, my daughter has been having loads of gas pain. We recently switched to formula in the last two weeks and I'm sure that has something to do with it. Well last night was horrible. She screamed and screamed and did not fall asleep until 330 am (which is when she is normally going to sleep from mid-night feeding). She has slept most of the day today and is passing gas, just not as much as normal. She will not let me massage her belly nor do the bicycle motion with her legs...she will lock her knees when I do it. Anyway, her last bowel movement was yesterday after we came home from the dr (diagnosed with GERD). Should I be concerned and what should I do?

**Oh the Dr prescribed Zantac for the GERD.

What can I do next?

Did the doc give a prescription for anything? Ask for Axid or Prevacid if not. Also, fill an old tube sock with rice, tie it off, and heat it for a minute in the microwave. Make sure it isn't too warm and then place it on her belly when she is having trouble. You can also hold her in the football hold (face in your hand, body the length of your arm) and pat her firmly on the back to help her release some of the air if she's having gas.

If she continues to have trouble, call the doctor! That's what they're there for.

And try not to let her sleep TOO much during the day at one time...it'll only cause more problems the next night. 3 hour stretches is enough, typically, and won't cause day/night confusion.

Good luck! Remember...you're the mama! We can all give you our advice and what worked for us, but in the end you know best for her!

Hello there, Mom...My newborn suffered from bad stomach cramps when I first started breastfeeding her. Let me start by saying this first: When she was first born, they had to give her formula because they were still working on me when she needed to eat. Well, the formula didn't sit well with her, she ended up throwing it all up. They had to switch to the lactose sensitive formula. She didn't throw this milk up. Well, when I finally got to breastfeed she was fine UNTIL, I went home and ate a bowl of cereal. I used regular milk in my cereal, and I noticed that when I breastfed her, the stomach problems came back. I was advised to drink the lactose free milk. When I did that, her stomach issues ceased. I said all that to say, maybe the baby is sensitive to lactose and she'll probably need a lactose free formula. Or if you want to continue breastfeeding, just start drinking lactose free milk. It's really good and you can use it just like regular milk. Other than that, I'm sure your doctor gave you some helpful advice, but I do hope this helps. Take care...

My first had GERD, my dr put him on Prevacid which worked great. I think once she is on the medication, the pain will ease and she will do fine. My cried and cried and then the Prevacid saved the day!!! Zantac should do fine, if not just talk to your dr about trying another medication. Good luck:)
