I just get back from Costco. I open the hatch up and my beautiful strawberries tumble out of the box and spill out onto the sidewalk. They were only on the ground for less than thirty seconds until I scooped them all up and hey did not fall into any dirt. I always wash them off anyway and I guessing the pesticides they use are probably way worse than what they may have touched on the ground. So, would you still eat them? I hate to waste $9 worth of strawberries :(
Thanks Ladies. I will eat them. Bug - I plan on trying out your rinsing method. Thank you.

Yep, they are fine. Do a vinegar wash on them. One part vinegar, to 10 parts water. Let them sit in it for 10 minutes or so and swish them around every so often. Drain and rinse. (It also helps them from getting moldy, and you will be amazed how disgusting the water is after!!)
ETA: Oh, I use the wash for all fruits and veggies, too!

Strawberries are grown on the ground. I'm fairly certain no one has really, truly washed them that well before you bought them...so, to me, you're no worse off than when you picked them off the shelf!! Go wash them and enjoy!! ;)

I always wash my fresh produce anyway. Especially strawberries.
If they didn't fall into anything obvious (puddled water, oil, someone's dumped disposable diaper, bird poop, etc)... then I'd probably wash them extra well, and eat them.
It isn't a matter of how long they were there, but what they landed on.

Yes - unless they fell into antifreeze or poop or something that would really freak me out.

Yes I would eat them, after washing of course. We go to a patch & pick our own strawberries.... I don't see how falling on the concrete for a minute is any worse than picking them out of the ground :-)

They grow in the ground - in the dirt, they fell on the ground - not in the dirt. When I was a kid, we grew our own. Lots of things lived in that dirt. Some of the critters even helped the strawberries grow.
So, I say...wash, and enjoy!

Heck yes!
They would have to fall into a poo filled toilet before I would toss them!
Yes, you read that right - a clean toilet, we're having strawberry shortcake tonight!
And you are right, the pesticides on non organic strawberries are way worse than toilet water or sidewalk dirt. You can actually wash the ground dirt away, the pesticides might stick around.....

It is totally fine as soon as you wash them very well. But try to get organic ones next time (Costco has them sometimes).
