5 Overnight Babysitting - How Much Would You Pay?

A friend asked me, how much should she expect to get paid.

A mother is going on a work trip Sun - Fri. She's asking this adult friend to take care of her 13 yr old son. She needs to be there in the mornings to get him off to school, then by 6pm at night and overnight.

What is a "normal" overnight rate for multiple nights?

Note: The sitter lives 1 hr away and will have to commute to and from her job each day (so 2 hrs of commuting time each day). Additionally she ride shares with her roommate, so this will also be inconveniencing the roommate too. I realize these are "the sitter's problems", but it does affect her decision on how much to expect.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

My sitter charges $50 for an overnighter. She is a college-educated and in her mid twenties. But she also charges $10/hr for the time the kids are awake. I would suggest at least $500 plus gas.

Tough question. I would say $100 per day minimum which allows the sitter to pay the driver for the inconveniece as well.

Hi, there, The rate would be at least $100 per day. I am always grateful to have someone stay overnight with my kids and, considering the responsibility and logistical issues involved, I always try to give a little more if I am able.

First off you can't "expect" to be paid. If a friend asks you to do a favor but doesn't mention money its just that a favor. If it is being done as a job then she and the person needing the care need to discuss it ahead of time. I would just ask the mom "how much do you usually pay for this?" and go from there. There is always the chance she is not expecting to pay at all. She should be but that doesnt mean she is.

I was paid back in the day $10hr then $100 for over night. that was for children not teens. so figure 2 hrs a.m. and 4 hrs p.m then over night. That includes her cooking and keeping the house clean. So I would say anywhere from $125-$150 would be good. also are there pets? that is another reason for the higher pay I received.
