5 Month Old with Diarrhea

My baby girl, breastfed except for an occasional bottle of formula before bed, has had a gradual increase in the number of poopie diapers for about the last 3-4 weeks. Over the past week, it has become increasingly mucousy, green, and watery, and we have even started to see streaks of blood once every 3 days or so. The dr. has run stool cultures for bacterial infections, all which have come back negative. I have also cut out all allergenic foods, and we have begun giving her hypoallergenic formula (4 days ago). Yet today I still saw a bit of blood. She is generally happy, although she complains once in a while after a feeding as if her belly hurts a bit. We are going to a GI dr next week, but I am wondering if other moms have experienced this. If so, what was the cause and did it clear up? I am also wondering if this is at all a reaction to the rotavirus vaccine?
I should also mention that not only is she well-hydrated, but she is also gaining weight quite well throughout all this.
Moms, I am worried and any positive support you can give would be so appreciated.

What can I do next?

It may not be a reaction to the rotavirus vaccine, it may actually be the virus. My son got rotavirus this summer. He was in the hospital for 5 days with the virus, due to severe dehydration. (He's 2 1/2) He did not get this vaccine when he was a baby. While in the hospital with the virus, our pedi. at the time told us that the vaccine for rotavirus is a live virus, so maybe she has the virus. Just watch for dehydration. Babies will dehydrated a whole lot quicker than older kids. When my son had the virus he did have blood in his stool. It took us 3 days for them to finally figure out that he had rotavirus. Just because they get vaccinated for something doesn't necessarily mean they won't get it. I would insist on her being tested for it. I definitely agree with the other posting that this may not be able to wait until next week. I would really watch her over the weekend and make sure she is drinking as much as possible.
I would definitely not rule out the fact that it could be rotavirus.
Good Luck and I hope she gets to feeling better soon!!

i was an exclusive breastfeeder to all 3 of my kids. Keep in mind, anything YOU eat will have an affect on your baby!! My youngest had many digestive issues when first born...it took us 6 month to figure out it was gluten!! i was put on an elimination diet to figure out what it was...very hard, but worth it. i had to give up milk, all dairy, onions, anything spicey (ate some jalepeno dressing...wow, i felt sooo bad), wheat (did you know there is wheat in red licorice??), etc...the list can be endless! Take a very close look at you diet...it may be something you wouldn't even dream of!

I do not think it's a reaction to the rotavirus vaccine. I would definitely get more tests done. Blood in the stool is not normal and should not be overlooked. I'm no doctor so I don't know what types of tests to recommend but maybe you can do some research on your own by googling "blood in 5 mnth olds stool" and see what you find.
It might lead you in a direction your pedi has not. I take my children to a wonderful family doctor. I feel as though in the past 7 yrs of being a mommy, I didn't get anywhere with pedis and they seem to overlook very important problems with children.
You might need to take her to the ER this weekend and get her seen by a GI doctor there. If the blood continues, this may not be something that can wait until next week.
Good luck and I hope everything it ok with your baby!!
