5 Month Old with Cancer- Last Update!

Hey mamas!

So the backstory, in case you missed my other posts-
My sister took her 5 month old baby to the doctor last week because he was wheezy, breathing heavily, his belly was large and hard, and she felt like something was wrong. They found an eat infection, told her it was bronchitis, but the doctor suggested they get an X ray just in case. Before they even got to their car, the doctor ran after them and told them they need to get to Loma Linda as soon as possible, which is a Hospital that specializes in pediatrics. He said there was a large mass. Later, they found out it was cancer and it was taking up most of his stomach. Surgery was needed.
The surgery was Friday. It was the most emotional thing I have ever witnessed. I can't even imagine what my sister went through and what Oncology patients and their parents go through.
My nephew weighed about 20 pounds when he went in. The tumor was 6 inches in diameter, almost 3 pounds! The tumor was taking over his right kidney, so they had to remove it and 2 lymph-nodes as well. He is recovering fantastically, probably because his poor little body is functioning properly for the first time in his short life.
I visited him yesterday. He is uncomfortable, but he will be just fine! The kids that are in the cancer ward are so positive and such a joy to watch. Their parents are so strong and the kids are so uplifting.
Chemo will start next week, once they determine what type of cancer it is. More than likely it is Wilm's, so that is another good thing. I hear if you are going to have cancer, Wilm's is the way to go! Chemo will be outpatient and I am not sure how long, but not too long I am sure. It is the super curable cancer.

Thank you everyone for praying. I really do believe it paid off big time! Thanks for all the kind words and stories shared. They all really did help. You all are so awesome!

Ah the question... Something positive, shall we?
What are you doing for dinner tonight for Father's Day?
I was going to take father's day cupcakes to my husband's work, but he told me not to haha!

That's awesome sweetie, thank you for updating for us. I was worried about your little nephew. Will he have to have chemo for the rest of his life? or just a period? Just a curious thought. I don't know about chemo outside my mom's.

We are grilling steaks tonight and making some asparagus and ranch red potato wedges. yum :)

Well, all I want to say is that my thoughts are with that precious baby, his mom, and your entire family.
I know a little boy who had cancer. He was terribly ill and the hospital and chemo and everything were very hard on his parents, but he was a little trooper.
That little trooper is now grown. He's one of the neatest people I know. I used to babysit him and now he works, goes to University, has formed several bands. He's a bit of a local celebrity, to be sure.
There is light at the other end of this and little ones need as much positivity around them as possible.

As you are blessed with all the good news, also continue to pray for the other little ones.

I'm so glad you have good news and hope that your blessings continue.

Best wishes.

May god be with your family!! What a great report!! I am glad he will be able to heal from this. May god be with him and help him mend in a speedy fashion:)

We are going to dinner with my mom and dad and my hubbies dad and step mom. I am excited because it is the first co-mingled family event(other then our wedding)we have done.

I think this year to bring out some positive, from a very crappy year, will be to re-write our family traditions:)Starting with Father's Day:)

I want family to be more then each of our own sets of parents....I want my mom to call his mom just to see how they are doing:)

Fingers crossed for your nephew, his treatment and recovery. There is nearly a 90% five year survival rate for Wilms in children his age! Keeping your family in my thoughts.

Enjoy your Fathers Day! We are taking my husband to see a show at the dinner theater tonight.

So glad he is doing better!
For Fathers day we will make burgers. I made my husbands favorite macaroni salad, bought a tuscan cantaloupe, and made a plate of chocolate dipped strawberries and sliced bananas. He worked his butt off yesterday helping with the garage sale so I "let" him go golfing today. haha, like I could have stopped him.

Brilliant news Beth. Survival rates for littlies with cancer is quite high, and growing all the time. Hope the recovery continues full steam ahead.

Hi Beth,

I'm so glad to hear the surgery went well. I will continue praying for a full and speedy recovery for little Dominick. Give your sister and extra hug for me.

Oh yes, your question. My DD (18) and I made dinner for dad/hubby yesterday. One of the advantages of having a "grown" child is that we can now go to places she wasn't allowed into a mere week ago, so we went to go see Jay Leno at the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach. We had a great evening, but I refused to buy her anything alcoholic and wouldn't even let her taste my drink, even though it contained far more diet coke than amaretto. I pointed out to her that there was a reason her right hand was stamped, vs. our left hands. It's not like we drink or let her drink at home, either. Lord only knows what will happen when she goes off to school in the fall and the reins fall off!

Ah, the joys of parenthood seem to last forever! ;-)

Now to the Mamapedia webmaster: How about adding a bulletin board for parents/families reaching out for a little TLC, but who don't necessarily have a "real" question?
