So What Happened?

Over half the parents in this class complained and they claim they will cut back, but I am not seeing it. I hope to switch her, but my husband and I don't agree at all.
After EVERY single mom complained, they put a one hour limit on and are enforcing it. Thanks.

I'd say 1-2 hours a night seems right to me. Prior to coming to coming back to school, the children were required to read three books over the Summer and in turn, write two book reports.. They will also have to read for a minimum of 30 mins a night. More homework does mean more work for me, but hey... It's important to me that my son have opportunities and I think a good education only adds to that..

I think it should also be noted that 4th grade is kinda transitional grade in that the children begin to get more homework and therefore, it does throw some of the kids off (mine included) even though he does get straight As.. It took a few months to get adjusted with being in 4th grade and how it carried more responsibility.. could be your child is just adjusting?

best of luck to you

Each school, private or public, will vary.

NOW, 4th grade, is not considered primary school anymore.
In 4th grade, it is a crux time... it RAMPS UP... in terms of expectations of the student and in terms of complexity of homework and what they are taught. Independence and responsibility and time-management... is more, as well. And is, expected of the student.
It is a whole shift... in all aspects. Not like 3rd grade. More homework too, now in 4th grade.

My daughter is in 4th grade. Public school.
BUT... all the parents and teachers alike, of both public and private schools told me... 4th grade is a big time of changes in expectations and responsibility and complexity of school work.
AND... if a child does not know or have the basics down pat... they will have a hard time in 4th grade.
In 4th grade... higher levels of Math is introduced and taught as well as higher levels of reading/comprehension and being able to write.... and understand all parts of a story/book etc. The mechanics, of it.

For my daughter, homework is EVERY day. AND on Fridays... which yes, means weekends, too.
EVEN on Holidays or vacations/school breaks... they DO get homework.

Simply, ask your child's Teacher about homework, when it is given out, what the routine is per class, and how much time homework should take.
Mostly ALL Teachers nowadays... are on e-mail and the schools have their own Websites. Go there and check it out.

Every school is different. I think no more than an hour is appropriate (which is about what our public school expects) but that is only MY opinion. Some private schools actually pride themselves on giving a lot of homework, hence, having "higher" expectations.
EDIT: just looked at your previous questions. Your daughter seems to be having a hard time at this school. Have you considered something else?

My DD in Catholic School had about 1-2 hrs on average per night. Some nights heavier, some lighter. Almost always had some type of homework on weekend. So far this year in 5th, she's had a study hall during the day where she can get alot of it done thankfully!

Depends on the school. All private schools are not the same. Ours gives VERY little homework. Typically something they have a week to work on, and it's due on the same day every week. But, as I said, all schools are different, so you'll need to ask the teacher what he/she expects.

With all the homework questions you've been asking I'm thinking the school you've chosen for your daughter is not a good fit for her. Last year in third grade (public school) my oldest had to read for 30 minutes, study math and spelling and do the assignment he had it ended up being an hour/hour and a half depending on how much studying/practicing he needed to do. School isn't like it used to be they do more work during the day and are given more homework at a younger age. I think 2 hrs sounds about right especially if she is bringing home unfinished class work.
