4Months Pregnant & a Little Concerned

I'm 4 months pregnant (already have 1 child). A few days ago I found a very light discoloration (pinkish/brownish) when I wiped after urination. Kind of like after you've been off your period for a couple of days (never happened in 1st pregnancy & can't find anything in What to Expect book). Also, yesterday I held my urination way too long I think, I peed, stopped, then peed all over again but it didn't feel like I was. Never had my water break in first pregnancy so I have no idea how that feels. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It certainly wouldn't hurt to mention this to your doctor. One thing my mother taught me when I had a similar issue (more common with 2nd + babies) was when you sit down to urinate and think you're finished, stand up slightly and lean forward a bit while lifting your belly just above the pubic bone (I always added a little wiggle, too!). This gets the weight of the uterus/baby off your bladder and sometimes allows urine that is "trapped" in the top part of the bladder to move down. Then sit back down and I'll bet you can pee again!

As a doula and childbirth educator, I have had numerous clients and students call me thinking their water had broken only to find that they had not fully emptied their bladder and a little shift in position allowed the "trapped" urine to move down and leak. If that's all it is, it is NOTHING to be embarrassed about. Trust me it's a common occurrence.

Give the belly lift a try and let me know if it helps. I think it's more common with the 2nd, 3rd etc because our bodies resist the changes of pregnancy a bit less since they've 'been there done that' so we often see issues such as this earlier in pregnancy than with the 1st.

Final word, if you're concerned, call your caregiver. If you're afraid you'll look silly, you likely have the wrong caregiver and might want to consider someone you are more comfortable with.

Best wishes,
L.

My advice is for you to see your OBGYN immediately. I don't think it's too wise to get advice from lay people in serious isssues like this. OBGYN are specially trained for things like like and if you don't have one, please go to the Emergency Room immediately. I wish you best of luck and hope all goes well with you.

Many women bleed all the way through their pregnancy, especially around the time they would naturally have their periods. Slight pinkish or brownish spotting should be nothing to worry about. If you get cramping, or bleed where you fill a pad, then you have issues.

Talk to your doctor to ease your concerns.

Good luck,

Jodi

Hi A.,

I experienced lots of light spotting like you described when I was pregnant with my first. The spotting was the most severe about 8 weeks into the pregnancy - it was like a light period and the blood was bright red! I was terrified and went to the doctor. It ended up fine, but they did give me some progesterone pills to take after that. I continued to have light spotting about the color you described many times - about 15 or more - and went to the doctor every time just to make sure everything was fine. It was so scary every time I went to the bathroom and such a huge relief if I didn't see any blood.

After the third visit because of the spotting, my doctor took a good look with that flashlight thing that's at the end of the table you lie down on at the OB. She saw a polyp, and somehow the polyp was causing the bleeding. After a regular delivery of my son, the polyp came out too somehow. I've since had another son, and I didn't even spot once with him. What a huge change from the first pregnancy!

So, definitely go to your doctor. They can help you find out why you're spotting or at least tell you not to worry about it if it's nothing! :)

Hi A. M,

During my first pregnancy I had what looked like a light period and sort of what you are describing for the first three months, so all through the first trimester. I didn't even know I was pregnant until I was about 12 weeks. I also know that it is common in some pregnancies for women to not be able to hold their urine.

Anyway, with all of that said I would check with your doctor as soon as possible to save you the worrying, especially since you couldn't find anything in your "What to expect book...". Sometimes you can call in and talk to a nurse and they will direct you from there or suggest you come in and be seen. For now, take it easy.

God bless,
R. B

Hi A.,

I have no advice, I was just thinking about you. Did you call the doctor? Are you okay?

I will keep you in my prayers. Hopefully it was just the 'hidden bladder' problem.

Take care!

I agree with the other posts that you should at least call the doctor and let them know. I did want to share my funny story with you because I had the same symptoms. Two days after Christmas in my 14th week I had the pinkish brown spotting that you mentioned. I was so scared that I was having a misscarriage that I called the dr. and they told me to immediately come in for the first ultrasound to make sure there was still a fetal heartbeat. I dropped my 6 year old at a friend's house because if it was bad, I didn't want her there. Got to the dr. and started the ultrasound and was so relieved to see the heart beat right away. But imagine my surprise when the lady told me it was TWO heart beats I was looking at. Turns out, I had a mild case of placenta previa becuause the placenta had attached itself low in the uterus and was causing a little pressure and bleeding. So here I am now with 15 month old boys that have proven to me that God has a tremendous sense of humor!!! LOL Give your OB a call, that's what they get paid big bucks for!! Best Wishes

Amy, If you have not already gone to the hospital or called your ob-gyn please do. As a nurse who worked in labor and delivery for years and an educator, I can tell you that there are many things that can cause what you described. Some benign and some more serious. If you get checked by your dr it will let you know immeadiately what is going on and truly relieve the stress and worry of the situation. We can deal with anything if we know what it is.

Wishing you the best possible information.

A.,
The discoloration is probably nothing to worry about. I would call my doctor if I were you, just to be safe. Stress and worry is the worst combination for your baby, so please try and spend time relaxing and doing something that is calming to your nerves. When a baby is in the picture the best advice I can give is to call your doctor on every little thing that seems out of sorts. ( it will be a relief to you when he/she tells you nothing is wrong ) I hope all is well, I will include you and your baby in my prayers.
God Bless,
C.

i had sorta the same thing w/ my daughter at 24 weeeks. I had cold and thought that the pressure of my coghing so much was the cause...I went ahead to the doc and my water was slowing leaking out. They were able to pospone my labor by 5 days. I would have never thaought that my water was leaking out and so Im glad my mom made a big deal and told me to get checked out just in case. My daughter was born at 24 weeks and 5 days. She is def. a mirical baby and is 3 1/2 now and just started pre-k on Wed and is doing fine....so if this did happen its not the end or the world but just something that you have to be strong for...I do hear that this type of thing happens to alot of people and the discharge end up being nothing so to be safe go to the doc...I hope the best for you.

I had bleeding with my pregnancy, panicked, called the doctor and found that it is very common. The doctor told me that sometimes when you have intercourse it can cause bleeding.

I would call your OB to be sure they know what is going on with you. They may want you to come in for a check up. Good luck!
