4 Yr "Un" Potty Trained

My son was pott trained at 3 yrs. Since Dec. 07 he has regressed. Sometimes he goes (usually mornings go well) and most other times he pees in his pants. He will be 4 Sept 8. I am so tired of "encouraging" him (is that mean?). I know he can do it and I feel that it is b/c he does not want to stop his activity. He is is a very strong-willed child (they do exist). Any fresh ideas??

What can I do next?

Potty treats are what finally did it for us. He never gets candt except in rare situations. So I started offering a single Rolo if he used the bathroom. After a couple days I stopped reminding, he would use the potty on his own and come tell me so he could have a treat. Once he was back in habit and experiencing success again, he stopped asking for a treat each time. He asked less and less over the next 2 months and then just stopped asking. Not the method I normally would choose but when you are desperate ;-)

My daughter has a mind of her own and is extrememly independant. I finally got tough with her and was quite frankly just got mean about it. There comes a point where letting them be trained on their own when their ready isn't working in my opinion.

Let your son be 100% responsible for his actions, messes, accidents. If he soils himself he needs to clean it up all by himself, he needs to remove dirty clothes, put soiled clothes in the laundry room or designated place, clean himself up and find and put on new clothing. I woudln't help at all, I'd supervise and leave it at that. When he has a accident act like you don't notice or care. After all the extra work he should come to realize he's not getting any attention from this and it's easier to just use the bathroom.

I'm sure you are changing his underwear and pants after each accident. You can try making him stay in his wet clothes after he pees in them. It might not be the most convenient for you but, it might not take him long to figure out that it's pretty gross and uncomfortable to sit in pee clothes all day.

I can't say that I have tried this, my older daughter is now potty trained but I'm an avid watcher of Jon and Kate +8 and one of the sextuplets would purposely vomit on herself when she was upset. Kate was able to get her to stop by telling her she'd have to stay in her puke clothes if she did it anymore. Hope this helps!!

i had the same problem with my son...whew it was rough...well-my solution was-i took away his favorite toy-his big wheel-said only big boys who use the potty can have this...never had a problem since-its just a matter of setting boundaries and ground rules.good luck

I once heard a speaker somewhere say to keep the childs pants off at home and after one accident he may not do it again. This was after my boy was potty trained. I probably would have tried it had I heard this earlier.

I had to just be patient and supportive and around fourish he was well on his way.

My mother in law and husband would get angry and critical towards the situation and him and all that did was to make my son feel bad about himself and added NO HELP AT ALL.
Try the speakers method and see what happens. Maybe he will run right to the potty.

Good luck and I hope this is not too messy! (might just take a couple times and thats it)
