4 Yr Old Has Body Odor

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this? My 4 yr old daughter has recently developed strong body odor - it is concentrated in her underarm area. I have tried 2 baths a day and she usually smells about an hour after a bath. There have been no changes in her diet and she drinks organic milk. I understand that kids sweat but the unusually strong odor has been bothering me. I am going to talk to her doctor but I was hoping that other mums would be able to help!!

So What Happened?

I took her to her doctor and as I suspected premature puberty was ruled out; diet does not seem to be an issue either. I realised that I had recenttly changed her soap - I used Burt's Bees body wash on her originally, but has switched to something else. I went back to the paraben/sulphate free Burt's bees bodywash and there has been a definite improvement.
But I am dismayed to think about how many harmful chemicals we are inadvertently exposing our children to...our food seems to be full of additives and so do most of the personal hygiene products. Which brings me to my next post - any moms out there who are satisfied with all natural, mostly chemical free products?? For both children and adults?

Sometimes it's an indication that her thyroid is either over or under active. You should ask her pediatrician about it.

Once you have her checked by doctor and find all is well, and you are still having problem, then try this. My son as a newborn up until about age one had the stinkiest feet. His great great granny told me to soak his feet in good ole tea and it would go away. She was right! I just would get tea bags moist and put them on his feet and put on socks. (Socks got stained!) but it worked. His stinky feet problem would go away for weeks at a time. He no longer has the problem, so don't know if it was hormonal or glands premature, or what. Hope this helps and it certainly won't hurt. :)

We went through something similar with our now 10-year-old. After a ton of tests and finally, a referral to an endocrinologist, we found out that she has a thryroid condition (inherited from my mom). She started taking medication every day and it slowed the signs of puberty way down. She now looks pretty normal for a 10-year-old. When you go to the doctor, make sure you mention ANY and ALL conditions that you have in the family (thyroid, diabetes, hormone imbalance, etc). Sometimes these things are genetic and it could give them a place to start with the testing. Good luck--let us know what happens!

You don't mention any other symptoms to think it is early onset of puberty (my daughter went thru this and so did I). If it is only stinky pits then I would have her checked for a yeast infection under her arms. The odor would be excess bacteria that thrives on yeast. Try washing her pits with vinegar.

When you bathe her be sure to rinse her underarms well, soap residue, makes you smell soon after washing, if it is not rinsed completely!

A.,
I have two daughters also and my oldest (now 9) went thru this at a very early age as well. We took her to the pedi and was referred to a endocrine dr. were they told us she had an overactive adrinal gland, (gland sits on top of the kidneys). Per the Dr. the only thing this gland does is create body oder and produce pubic hair (which she started getting at early age 6). Don't know for sure if that is what your daughter has, but just mention it and maybe go to a endocrine dr.

You mentioned that she drinks organic milk, so this may not apply at all. My friends daughter was dealing with early puberty and went to their doctor to discover it was the milk they were drinking. They said some grocery store milks should be avoided completely due to the added hormones they give the cows. Walmart was on the top of the list, but HEB was not. This may not be helpful, but I thought I would throw it out there :) Good luck!

It might be a yeast issue. Try taking sugar and yeast/bread out of her diet and see if that helps. My daughter started stinking at 3. Make sure you get all the soap off her arm pits, use Toms of Maine deodorant.

I haven't taken out the sugar yet but she doesn't have yeast in her diet at all (because she can't eat wheat so we don't have yeast breads often.)

My friend was going through the same thing with her 4 year old daughter. She had her checked and was sent to a specialist. They determined that she was experiencing precocious puberty (premature puberty). In addition to the body odor the little girl was beginning to grow hair where she shouldn't be at that age. There could be a few different causes, but they will have to do blood work to determine if this is what your daughter is experiencing. It may be worth researching. I hope this helps give you some idea of maybe where to start. Best of luck to you.

Hi, this may sound strange, but it works. Try slices of a baking potato and rub under the arms. Trust me it works. My daughter had the same issue.

Good Luck

Hi, I was watching Discovery channel Mystery Diagnosis and there was a case where this woman had suffered thru something like that her whole life. Only until she was an adult did she find out it had something to do with the way her body digested food. You should research it and don't stop until they find out what it is. Body odor can be very traumatic. Hope this helps.

I too, experienced this with my daughter who is now 8yrs old. She was about 5 yrs old when this started. I took her to her pediatrician and he said that this is normal as kids are hitting puberty earlier due to many reasons. One in particular, was that companies are adding additional hormones in foods. What he reccomended was to wash under her arms thoroughly and then to use a mild deorderant if the washing did not help. So that's what we ended up doing. She has been doing this ever since. Several of my girlfriends daughters have also had to do this around the same age. Now we are going through major growing pains and early development of breast (buds) and not wanting to wear a training bra nor a sports bra. The only time I can get her to wear a sports bra is when she wears her softball uniform. So if anyone has any suggestions on how to get my daughter to wear either a training bra or sports bra, please let me know. I am at my wits end.
