4 Yr. Old Granddaughter -- Is It Acid Reflux or What?

We've noticed for quite some time that my 4 yr. old granddaughter will have spells where it sounds like she has something in her esophagus and it's trying to comem up. Sometimes the spells are worse than others. We've asked her about it, but she says she's okay. Then, about four nights ago, it got worse. She kept saying she needed to throw up, but wouldn't. We could hear that sound repetitively like something was trying to come up, but nothing ever did. A weird thing about this is that she appears to only have the symptoms in the evening time -- not during the day. The last four nights she has really struggled with it. My daughter is taking her to the doctor tomorrow, but I thought I would put the question out there to see if anyone else has experienced this with their child. Thanks for any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, or advice you can give.

What can I do next?

I have an almost 4yr old daughter who has been bothered with reflux since birth.

Sometimes when she's eating, her throat will make this weird sound. It seems like it should hurt, but she says it doesn't. She had an upper GI done and they told me her esophagus had acid buildup. The pediatrician prescribed Prevacid daily before meals and it does help. A few times at night it seems like her food is coming up and she's gagging. Most of her flares are usually in the mornings before breakfast.

We've been dealing with reflux since she was born. She's scheduled to see a Pediatric GI Specialist in January. Hopefully we can find some answers and discontinue the Prevacid.

Certain types of foods will aggravate the reflux as well. I started keeping a food journal to help me find the different foods that aggravated her esophagus. Now that I know, we have less episodes.

HTH!

Of course you need a doctor to diagnose your granddaughter, but if it is acid reflux there are natural remedies that can help. I switched to natural methods. It took about 3 months but I did almost totally cure my acid reflux. I get a mild bout about twice a year now.

I am a Shaklee Independent Distributor and I sell high quality supplements. I take alfalfa tablets (for a child they can be ground and sprinkled on food) and a pre and probiotic system (easy for a child). I also occasionally take a digestive enzyme and extra zinc. These are a few of the kinds of things that could help. I would certainly encourage your daughter to talk to the doctor about the pre and probiotics.

This sounds like an allergic reaction. Interestingly, the medication that is given for acid reflux is also an antihistamine.

Start writing down the food that she eats and track the symptoms. The most common allergies are dairy, and wheat.

Good luck!

It could be, My flare ups always happen in the evening, I didn't even know it was acid reflux sometimes the only symptoms you have are those like you described, I only went to the Dr. because I felt like I had a lump in my throat and it turned out to be reflux.

I'm getting an upper gi test soon to see if there is any damage.
