4 Yo with Pubic Hair?

My daughter started getting little hairs "down there" when she was about 2 1/2. Of course, my husband didn't want to talk about it. Not his little girl. I took her to the pediatrician and she said "oh it is probably just peach fuzz". That was until she took a look for herself. Yep, she has honest to goodness pubic hair. We had a bone age scan done as well as hormone tests. All normal! I think it is inevitable that she is going to get breasts and start menstration very early. Is there anyone else with this problem?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We finally got the test results back on this issue. All tests, including thyroid were normal. It appears to be premature maturation of the pubic hair itself and not true puberty. We have appointments every 6 months to keep up on any changes.

Definitely take her to an endocrinologist. Her glands are difinitely producing too many hormones. It could be her thyroid or maybe even possibly her adrenal gland, which both are major hormone producers. If that's the case, it is definitely something that can be treated with medication.

I was watching the Today show before Christmas and they had a report on how quickly kids are maturing these days. There was a four year old that was in a similar situation as yours. She had something else going on like thyroid? Pretty simple answer to her situation. I would seek a specialists attention and you may want to see if the report is in the archives of msnbc today show. - www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12244306/ (this article is about thyroid and adults but may be a start) Good luck!

Have you tried switching to organic for your dairy and hormone-free for your meats? Several of my friends do this for their daughters because they believe that "regular" foods speed up puberty. And it makes sense - livestock are constantly being injected with growth hormones to make them bigger and this gets into our meats. The same goes for our dairy. Its not as much of a big deal for boys - but the average age of a girl's first period keeps getting lower every year and this is a probable cause. Its worth looking into for your daughter's sake.

Hi T.!

I would definitely check into seeing a children's endocronologist possibly? Some sort of specialist. I would go into a complete medical history, all the way back to utero. I also concur with the earlier statement, check into organic foods.

Good luck!

What kind of hormone test did they do, blood or saliva? I have a friend who had a family member with this problem and they took her off milk and put her on organic milk. (She drank a lot of milk) It worked, no more problems. Our milk has so much estrogen in it. Let's face it, it is a growth hormone. Anyway, maybe you could try changing milk if you haven't alread.

My niece started getting breasts at age 7 or so(2nd grade!!). And when her doctor checked, she had higher hormone levels than normal. But, her dairy intake was also way up there too. So, she had to cut WAY back on her dairy intake due to the same growth hormones others have mentioned. Now she's 9 (10 in April) and is just starting to wear bras with cups.

My daughter started her period as soon as she turned 9. She is now 24 and perfectly healthy. I believe that we have been seeing earlier puberty longer than just the last few years.
