4 Year Old Suffers from 'Spiders' on His Skin

My 4 year old began getting irritated with hairs (mine, his, fibers, etc) that would tickle his skin if they fell on him a long while back. Over the last 2 months he's been wiping away at his skin in a series of several to dozens of motions all over his body. He's not complaining, but advises that he has 'a lot of spiders all over today Mama". It is not 24 hours constant and does not occur during stressful moments (can be focused, playing reading books with me, whatever activity). I've changed bath soap, shampoo, several body lotions, no lotion, baby powder, aloe gel and cannot prevent it. I also don't elaborate or focus on it, so am not encouraging a psychological event. He also began chewing his fingers around the same time as the spiders started invading. Also no marks on him, no rashes, no allergies, no medication taken, healthy diet and an easy-going well-loved kid. Can you help with any approach so he can be relieved of the discomfort?? Thank you for reading.

S.,

You could try a placebo for spiders that really works at calming the nervous system and is good for the skin and general health as well. I'm thinking of therapeutic grade lavender, cedarwood, or "gentle baby" blend essential oil.

For more info on the health benefits of essential plant oils of therapeutic quality you can check out S.-healingoils.com

I think its great you don't make a big deal about it.

best wishes,

have you taken him to a doctor. my god daughter, who is currently under going chemo for hodgekins lymphoma, had the first symptom of never ending itching on her legs. Don't rule any thing out. It took them 8 months to take the itching seriously and finally make the diagnosis.

The list of things you mentioned changing did not include laundry detergent.
My boyfriend has the same reactions and it ceased once I changed to All (fragrance/dye free) detergent for his clothes & sheets. He is also a finger biter but that is stress related. (a fresh manicure helped somewhat) I know that won't work on your son but may be the spiders are related to the laundry soap.
good luck

Hello Siobjan

You didn't mention if you changed your laundry detergent. I had to go back to dreft when my daughter was about 4. and forget about bleaching the white socks too. have you asked him what makes him feel like spiders on him? did he watch something on tv he shouldn't have? has he been tested for allergies? could it be dust? is it after vacumming? after cleaning the tub, bath, spraying lysol, etc. it's a big puzzle. I hope it's just environmental and not any type of OCD. try and watch when is he biting his fingers. there is a company called herbs for kids and they have valerian calm and chamomile calm --as long as no ragweed allergies exist-- a natural way to try before using RX meds if you're up to it. try and keep a diary so if you need to discuss it with your pediatrician you'll have date, time, and activites for that day. even foods consumed. at first it might be too much you could probably just leave yourself a voice mail and transcribe it later. Good luck! ~Carmen~

Hi S.,
You might try buying nontoxic products from the health food store. He might be allergic to the formaldehyde in all the products. It's in shampoos, lotion, etc. almost in every product.
I could suggest a wholesale buying club where you can get all your daily consumables shipped to your home, and they are less expensive.
