My daughter is going to be 4 years old on Sunday. From the time she was born until she was 2 years old she took a pacifier and never anything after that. All of a sudden within the past 3 weeks she has started sucking her thumb... doesn't matter which one.. but this bothers me b/c I don't know why she started this... Have any of you experienced this? And do you know why they would start so late? How do you get a child to stop this?

What can I do next?

Does your younger daughter suck her thumb or pacifier? If so this probably has something to do with it. Your older daughter may be looking for attention, positive or negative. She has found something to get you to watch her and give her your attention. Try spending special time with her, alone and see if this helps. Also, talk about how babies suck thier thumbs, fingers, pacifiers, etc...not BIG girls. Good luck. If you have any questions let me know...you can email me.

I know ur feeling !! My two oldest had pacifiers I took my oldest away when she was 2 and she went to her thumb because she had nothing else to suck on . It's a comfort. My second i took away way later right before kindergarden and she never went to her thumb. So i think it's when there ready to separate. Good luck

Hi D.. My daughter sucked two of her fingers for the longest time. When I took her to Dr. Duga, who is a pediatric dentist, he recommended we use a product called Mavala. It is a clear nail polish that tastes really bad. It only took one application for my daughter to break the habit! I believe it works on most children. You could ask your dentist about it or even if you don't go to Dr. Duga, I think you could buy it from them. I think it was about $10 or $15. His # is ###-###-####. I'm not sure where you live, but his office is on Amberly Dr. in New Tampa.

Hope this helps.
Good luck!

sucking on anything for to long it's not good! I worked for an orthodontic office and most little young kids we'd see were the ones who had sucked thumbs. because of this believe it or not it moves the alignments of teeth forward which messes up the whole system and teeth grow in strangely...( also when kids eat beef or chicken any meats they have to brush because if it gets stuck in between that messes up the teeth and pushes them in strange places ...floss and brush..=) ...but anyhow research up online i think there is a lotion out there and nail polish if she uses it that tastes really nasty when put in the mouth...this way every time she goes for it she'll feel grossed out and after a week eventually she'll give up. best wishes!

It's for security. Relax, she will out grow it. No child has ever died from sucking their thumb and it does a lot less harm to their teeth than a bottle or pacifier. The more you stress about it the more she will want to do it.

I think the same, is the attention. My daughter is going to be four and I share time with her father and he kept her too long the last time and she suck her fingers so bad that she hurt herself and once in a while I observed her with er nails. So I try to spend as much time with her as I can and she dont get her fingers in.
