any advice...my 4 week old daughter has recently started spitting up after almost every feeding and tends to be hungry again right away. i've breastfed all three of my girls and this frequent spitting up is a first for me.

What can I do next?

I agree! Good job with the breastfeeding. I found that if I eat something with Splenda it makes my daughter spit up more then usual.

She could have acid reflux. My son did for a short time and his ped prescribed him a form of Zantac.

My son too spit up tremendously. Our pediatrician suggested half and half. During a feeding, breast feed half the time and the other half the time he was on soy formula.

You might try to post on breastfeeding.com. It could be that she has reflux too which is possible. Did you check with your pediatrician already? How about a lactation consultant?

Same thing happened with 2 of my 3 children. They were allergic (rather intolerant) to something I was eating. So I had to change my diet. Problem was solved and I went on to nurse for over a year (13.5 months and 20 months respectively). Good luck!

If you can I would pump and find out how much milk you are giving her at a time its possible that it could be too much. I would even try stopping her after 5 min. and burping her to maybe get an air bubbles out. My sister in law is my nursing consultant, she does breastfeeding classes at babys r us her email is ____@____.com feel free to email her and ask her for her opinion!!! Congrats on the girl club! I had my 3rd girl July 31st. Mine are 4, 3 and 7 weeks tomorrow

B.,
Have you asked your daughters pediatrition about reflux? GERD (Gastroesophagul Reflux Disease), my 5 month old daughter was the same way and come to find out after months of stress and worry, she was put on Zantac and Reglan daily for 2 months. No more spitting up for her and now she is off her medicine and has outgrown the reflux. Just a suggestion, never can be sure of why babies spit up, some babies just do more than others. Hope this helps, is worth asking, I didn't know anything about it until I had my daughter.

My son did the very same thing and when I took him to the doc, the doc said he was allergic to my milk and I had to put him on very expensive formula. So my suggestion is to take her in and let the doctor know your concerns.

www.lalecheleague.org - has a *wealth* of information. Search "spit up" on there & you'll get several articles. Oversupply is the first thing to suspect. Next is gas, burp frequently during nursing, and make sure she's as upright as possible during feeding. You might also consider whether or not your menses has returned - it can change your milk. Personally, switching to formula (even a little) or giving meds would be a last resort. Babies are not allergic to their mama's milk (it's custom-made just for them), but they can develop cow's milk allergies (among others) if you consume a lot of it yourself (though the incidence is much less than 10% in everything I've read).

I see that many others have said reflux may be the problem , and i have to agree , when my daughter was 4 weeks old she actually stopped breathing because of relfux. she was eating and at the same time it was comming back up and she choaked. It was the scaryest thing ever!!! now she still has spats of it but nothing like that! She was put on Zantac and it worked pretty good but the doctor also told me to give her ginger root drops to help settle her stomach for when the zantac was not enough , i love that stuff !!! good luck :)

My son had that problem when I was nursing and he had to go on Zantac and Reglan his pediatrician gave him for reflux just for a few months and he kind of outgrew it after that. I think it seems to be a pretty common problem that maybe if treated she can hopefully outgrow it quickly. :)

Have you asked her pediatrition about acid reflux? My 14 week old has it and has had it since he was 6 weeks. I breastfeed also and he would spit up constantly. He is on medication now. My sons doc says to keep him upright for a half hour after feeding and maybe even elevate the head of the crib.

First of all ... Good job for breastfeeding!! Do that as long as you possably can! For some reason my son does the same thing. For my son the problem is gas. He acts like hes constipated occasionally and spits up what just -Looks- like alot of formula. It may soak her shirt but its most likely only 5cc's or so of breastmilk. Pumping to see what she takes in is a good solution to finding out if she is getting too much. 2-3 oz's is about all a 1 month old can digest within a 2 hour period(i think that is what my son's nurse told me) Also it could be what you have been eating. It may be a good idea to keep track of what you eat during the day and when your daughter spits up. I think it takes 4 hours for what you ingest to go to your milk. It could be a number of things like the other girls listed. Personally i went to the doctor as soon as it became consistant. Its better to be safe than sorry espically regarding something as important as your children. I hope its nothing serious and can be easily fixed!

My daughter did that for about a week when she was 4 weeks old, she just stopped on her own. But if I were you, I would call someone that really knows what they are talking about. Like La Leche or your WIC breastfeeding peer counselor or a Lactation Consultant. Although, breastfed babies rarely over eat, as you probably know after doing it three times. They usually eat just what they need, which is why we don't have to measure it for them, easy! So I don't think that would be the problem.

Have Reese checked for Acid Reflux. My daughter did that for 4 out of 5 month that she has been here. They finally diagnosed her with it and have her on Zantac and she is doing quite a lot better. ____@____.com if you have any questions this is my e-mail address.
