J.H.
Sounds like he may be teething, even if no signs of teeth yet. And they go through spells of changing nap habits also, and it doesn't sound like anything to worry about.
I have a great 4 month old that had started to sleep through the night or would only wake once to eat, but for some reason he isn't napping well during the day and I think its effecting his nights. Could he be teething? I don't see or feel any teeth, could I just be missing them? If he isn't teething what could it be? Any ideas?

I just posted about the same thing.. My daughter is 5 mos and not napping more then 30 min at a time and has been that way for awhile now. But I guess I can live with it and maybe one day she will just start.. But she does sleep all night and I would rather her sleep through the night then take good naps But when we are out shopping she sleeps the whole time on the go.. she goes to bed around 7:30-8:30 and sleeps till 6:45-8:00am... So I guess I am lucky on that part.. Good luck I hope things work out let me know.. I hope your baby starts napping as well as mine I would be ok with just one good nap.....
Hi J.!
I actually have had this problem with my seven month old! He actually has never taken really great naps and doesn't really sleep all night long!! I just let him sleep for as long as he wants during the day and let him tire himself out playing before bed. He takes about three to four naps a day ranging from 10-30 minutes up to sometimes an hour, and at night we have established a bedtime routine of bath, rice cereal and bed. He is sleeping a lot better at night than he was a month ago, but still not sleeping all the way through the night! Babies change so much from month to month it is crazy! They go through spurts where they will sleep all the time and then they go through spurts where you can't get them to sleep! Just hang in there and let him tell you what he needs. It will get better!
My little boy was sleeping great at night, but didn't get his naps together until he really started crawling. Now, he takes 2 and half hour morning naps and about 2 hour afternoon naps--totally on a schedule! I wouldn't push the nap thing--even though it would be a great relief for you! I tried EVERYTHING and nothing I did seemed to work until he was ready for it. I just knew my child was not a schedule baby, but just miraculously he started napping one day. I would say stick with your routine and eventually it will just fall into place though. For good advice on sleeping that has worked absolute wonders for my sanity is to read the book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. I swear by it! Just don't put too much pressure on yourself with the sleep thing, just get a routine, and your baby will catch on one day when he's ready.
4 months is notorious for sleep set backs. Between possible teething and develpmental milestones, it can be a bear. It sounds like he's sleeping great at night though. The fact that he's waking only once is amazing in my book. Usually, it takes a couple of weeks before they fall into a new schedule so take heart. It will get better.
Re the teeth, sometimes it takes a while to feel them. My ped was telling me that they can take a long time to emerge even though they're pushing against the gums. She recommended we try the Hylands teething tablets. They're homeopathic. Another life saver during teething was baby Motrin and Baby Tylenol. Although, if he's sleeping good at night, you may not need these yet. Talk to your ped re dosage and if he or she thinks this might be of some help.
i am always a little surprised when moms expect babies so young to sleep through the night. between teething and growth spurts and intestinal adjustments, those little bodies go through so much. even if you do not feel the teeth, those could be the beginnings or he is growing and needs to eat more often. don't worry the time to sleep will come. just be patient...now there is a new man of your dreams!
