My grandson is having some sort of problem with his thyroid and he's not gaining weight. Has anyone else had this problem and how was it treated? They scheduled an appointment for him in St Louis because they couldn't treat him locally. Does anybody know what this might be?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just want to update everyone with what happened at my grandson's appointment in St. Louis. They said that his blood was drawn too soon after he was born so when it was taken again a few months later it looked elevated but probably wasn't. They took more blood and will retest him in 4 months.

I also want to thank everyone who took the time to respond to my request. It made me feel much better knowing there were other people out there is the same situation that I am and could offer suggestions and advice. You were all WONDERFUL!

hi T.,

Have they done any testing to determine a definate thyroid problem??? My daughter is 20 months old and has severe weight gain issues. She was born with CDH (a birth defect). You can look it up a breathofhopeinc.com if you're interested. My daughter has had issues with weight since birth. There are many factors that can cause weight issues. We see a developmental therapist and GI specialist and a nutritionist as well as a few other specialists for different reasons. Most dr's start with increasing the calories the child takes in. At 4 months old my daughter weighed about 9 pounds. Failure to thrive is a "generic" diagnosis given to children who have weight gain issues and sometimes dev. problems, etc. There is no exact definition for it. What area do you live in? My daughter has been to a few of the nations top hospitals and I have resources to find them in other states as well. Please feel free to contact me personally at ____@____.com I would be happy to give you some ideas of what we did to help with weight gain and help you in anyway finding the care and answers you are looking for. Because of my daughter's situation I am in contact with many other families dealing with the same issues as you and I both. Contact me anytime I'd love to help!

She has a huge zest for life and all it has to offer!!!

Hi Travy,
try going on this web site www.touchoflifechiro.com
she is an awesome alternative medicine doctor in the area and she can probably help without giving a 4 mo old medicine.
she changed my life.

Has he been diagnosed with a thryoid oproblem are you sure it is not anything else. Pleae look up Eosnophilic esophagitis and mke sure that is not it too. go to www.curedfoundation.org or www.apfed.org and chek it out.
alot of kids ion here have no signs or symptoms but just dont gain weight. The food is not absorbed by the Gi system hence causing no weight. do you have a Gi dr or just go to an endocrynologist?
good luck

Do you know for sure it's thyroid? Was there a test done?
There is also a condition called Failure to Thrive that would have the same symptoms. Both of them indicate that there might be more needs for nutrition supplements.

T.-Hi-first of all a newborn should not have a thyroid problem but because of all of the toxins that we are exposed too, this is becoming an all to much of a problem. First-I would recommend chiropractic and cranosacrial care. Most of the times that can help reduced and eliminate any sort of problem. I have been a naturalist for 10 years and practice only holistic. I have seen much too often babies and small children that have an toxicity and acid build-up. A good source of holistic healing would be www.karensraw.com and check on her link for practices that are offered in her establishment. Depending on where you are located I have some great chiropractors. If the thyroid is sluggish or not functioning properly it is clogged. You can not treat it with drugs!!

If you would like further info on this do not hesitate to contact me.

The only other thing that I know of is a hyperthyroid. Is he looseing weight? Other than that, I'm not really sure. I do have a hyperthyroid, and a simple blood test was taken. Once I was diagnosed I was put on med. twice a day, and it's been great. I've only been on the medicine about 3 or 4 months and I feel a million times better. I'm sure it's different for babies as far as treatment goes. It's great that your family is taking action on this, a thyroid problem can get very serious if not treated, but if it is treated early, it's not that difficult to maintain. I hope you and your family have as easy of a time as I did. Good luck.
