Please help me: My 4 month old son, started rubbing his eyes a week ago, or more. His Pediatrician couldn't see anything in his eyes but gave him Pataday which didn't work. of Late it actually got worse because he now has a bruise under his lid from so much rubbing. We saw an Ophthalmologist today, who said there's nothing in his eyes. I use Aveeno creamy bath for his body but Baby Aquaphor for his face. I changed the sheets, vacuumed, dusted, but nothing seems to work
Not knowing what to do is frustrating as you can well imagine -- pls does anyone know ? Thank you so much in advance!!!

What can I do next?

Hi S., have you tried flushing his eyes out with cool water
i don't know if that will help but you can try it. Does` he cry when he is rubbing his eyes, and is it in both eyes. I would take him back in to the ped, or I would just take him to urgent care or to an emergency room, it is both eyes. Do you have pets, that he may be alergic to? it could be anything, but i would take him back in. I pray he gets better. J.

could it be a pet allergy? Even if you don't have pets, does somebody who holds him a lot or helps you with him have any? Also, stop wearing any scented perfumes or lotions yourself for a little while, could be an allergic reaction to something you are putting on yourself.

Maybe it's something in the air?
For example: trees, plants, pollen, grasses, smog... things like that.
Here where I live, at certain times of the year, the fruit tree flowers make people's allergies come out, and yes, itch.

And yes, as the other poster said, don't use products on his face... just water. At this young age, the baby products can still be too much to tender skin/areas.

For me, I get itchy eyes too, and watery eyes, and it's mainly because of allergies to things in the air flying around. I've been that way since I was a child.

For laundry, I'm sure you are, but use "baby" laundry soap too. Or maybe it's something on his hands...something he plays with?

Good luck and take care,
Susan

I was going to suggest taking him to a Dermatologist. They will be more educated about skin allergies than a Pediatrician. What did your Pediatrician say other possibilities could be? Or go to a different Pediatrician for a second opinion (if you have an HMO, they usually have allowance for second opinion visits outside your primary physician). I know it's frustrating when you know somethings wrong and the doctors don't see it or know what it is. Keep researching like you are and you'll find the answer. I'll look into it too and let you know if I find anything interesting. It does sound like allergies.

p.s. After re-reading your post, I wanted to suggest that you stop using the baby aquaphor on his face. You really don't have to use any soap on his face. I just clean my baby's face with a warm washcloth per our Pediatrician's advice. At bath time, I do the same, washing her face first with the wet (but no soap) wash cloth. Then clean the rest of her body with Dove soap (recommended by our Pediatrician because it is so mild). Try not putting any soap on his face for a while and see if it helps. Also, ask your doctor about giving him Benedryl or other type of anti-itch cream to help in the meantime. Good Luck. K.

My son has done the same thing almost as long as I can remember. I was afraid he was going to scratch his eyes out! Turns out that this is what he does to indicate he's tired. He scratches at his eyes when he's getting close to nap or bedtime and after he wakes up for a while so I have to be sure to keep his nails clipped and clean so he doesn't cause an infection.

it sounds like he has an allergy. my twin nephews did the same thing. they both have allergies, eczema and asthma. they got a medicated cream for their eyes. i agree with what another mom said and get an appt with a dermitologist they may be able to pin point the problem. good luck!

My son had eczema around his eyes...the skin would get inflammed/swollen and really, really dry. His eye lids on top and bottom would crack open because they were so dry. We had to co-sleep with him and hold his arms down while we slept to keep him from rubbing his eyes at night....My doctor gave him a few samples of this topical medication called Protopic it was a non-steroid cream...used a tiny bit for a couple days til it would clear up then keep the skin really hydrated using Eucerin Cream and Aquaphor. I would dab the Eucerin on like it was eyeshadow :) Hope this Helps!!
