4 Month Old with a Lack of Appetite

My baby is 4 months old, and yesterday had a low grade fever. She was still eating - slept most of the day, and wanted a lot of cuddles, but otherwise still brought out her smile when she was awake. This morning she no longer has a fever, but she doesn't want to eat, is this something I should be concerned about, or is it the aftermath of a fever? I've gotten her to eat about half of her normal feedings so far, but that's it. Any suggestions or advise?

What can I do next?

I have an almost 5 month old, and he displays this behavior when, a) teething and/or, b) hasn't pooped in a while and/or just doesn't feel like eating. Sometimes as soon as he poops, he is ready! I also notice my son will be super hungry one day and a few days later not so much. So, I would just continue to do what you are doing, then call the doc if wet diapers stop for a continued period.

It sounds like she may be teething! My son had a low-grade temp, poor appetite and was generally "grumpy" just before his little chompers popped through!

My grandson who is now 26 months had a fever for about 5 days, temp anywhere from 100-103 and was sleeping quite a bit and then day before yesterday became lethargic and they took him to ER..he was sent home with an enema as he has been constipated as well. They took him back to ER last night and more tests were done as he was getting worse and at 1 this morning they discovered he has H1N1. Since he has no respiratory problems and has probably had the flu for 5 days, they sent him home and told to get him on tylenol or motrin for the fever. The Dr. said the flu lasts for 7-10 days. Parents were told that if he isn't better by the next day to take him to his regular Dr. We are in the middle of a winter storm and they live 10 miles from town!

She could be teething. My DD always loses her appetite for the first 2-3 days when she starts cutting a tooth. The fever and cuddles could be attributed to that too... I would just keep an eye on her soggy diapers, and keep offering when she seems hungry. :)

Might be teeth!

Anytime my kids are/were teething, they stop eating (like normal) for about a week before the tooth comes through.

Remember that they also go in spurts. My 3yr old still does this. He'll eat like a horse for a wekk, and then barely anything the following week.

If you notice that she's lethargic or otherwise not herself, I'd go see the doc. But if she's otherwise normal, she might just be in a lull. My 7mos old is in one right now! :)

You could check with your pediatrician, but I wouldn't worry too much. She might not feel very well. Just like adults -- kids don't have the same appetite when they are sick as they do when they are healthy.

Just make sure she is still wetting diapers, as you don't want her to get dehydrated.

I hope she feels better soon!

Probably teething, 2 of my 4 and 1 grandchild had teeth pop in at 4 months. Like the other Moms said make sure she is not dehydrated.

it is a lack of wet diapers that you need to be concerned with. If she is still eating something and drinking enough to have wet diapers throughout the day, she is probably okay. if she stops having wet diapers, call the doctor...that can get serious pretty quickly.
