4 Month Old Suddenly Not Sleeping

My 4 month old son has been a decent sleeper until three nights ago. He has been on a bedtime routine-going to bed always at the same time, getting a bath and then eating before being put in his crib. He has been in his crib in his own room since 2 months old and he has not had a problem with it. He has been waking up once at night to eat and then goes back to sleep right away!

Last week our son became sick with a fever and after having to go to the doctor and then the ER, he WILL NOT sleep. He is tried and fussy, but just cries and cries. If I feed him and he falls asleep, he is awake and screaming in just minutes. He has done this all night long for three nights now. He has not had a fever since yesterday morning and there are no other symptoms (his ears were checked twice five days ago). If you have any suggestions I would realkly appreciate it. My husband and I both work and are very exhausted. We thought we were past this stage and instead we have gone in reverse.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It seems that it was a mixure of a 4 month wakeful period and my little one being sick. He had a virus of some sort and then caught a cold. He seems to be getting back on track.

This happened to us too at this age although my son had been sleeping through the night since 6 weeks. My baby needed more milk and was waking up because he was hungry although he wasn't obvious about being hungry and it took me a few nights (and my mother!) to figure it out. So once I upped his ounces he went back to his normal sleep schedule. Given your situation, I would try that and if you don't notice an improvement that night, then call your pedi again just to be o the safe side.

Is he on antibiotics?

Most make my dd super hyper, and they irritate her stomach.

Could he be teething?

getting sick disrupts their schedule, and although he seems better to you, it rerally sounds like he still may not feel good and back to normal yet, Is he still on meds, sometimes these have effects, and of course the meds have to be given the full dose to do the correct job and not get them immune to the meds, it could be effecting his sleep etc. if he is still on them. Does he calm right down when you pick him up and cuddle him? Or does he still cry? If he keeps crying I would think something is hurting, whether it be a tummy ache, ear ache or something. He could be starting to cut teeth, but I rathur daoubt that or there would be a symptom in the day time.

They always have times when they suddenly have sleeping problems, especially when they get sick or their routine changes. I feel the best way to handle it is the same way you taught him in the first place when he was younger. Let him fuss for a few minutes, then check on him and reassure him with a pat on the back or calming words(don't pick him up!). Keep repeating this while extending the amount of time you let him fuss a little bit more each time. If he has good sleeping habits to begin with, it won't take him long to get back into his old routine again. Good Luck! p.s. if he has only been without a fever for a few days, he may still feel a little sick, but once you feel he is better, then try letting him fuss it out a little.

I would call or visit the pedi again just to be sure he is well. If everything checks out, then maybe he is teething. Give him Tylenol before bed. Ask doctor about dosage.
